I’m sure Bush wish he hadn’t made this comment.

“Tough. They can choose conscientious objector status if they like. Or sit in prison where they would undoubtedly be assigned war-effort support work.”
“And if they were drafted to serve in a support role, or medical role, transportation role you would not go along with this?”
You are correct. I stated quite clearly that (1.) it is a part of our biblicist Christian faith, (2.) our daughters have been diligently trained in this area from infancy, that they have a particular biblical roll. My post was clear enough.
“The preservation of our republic is more important than anyones beliefs about women in combat.”
then what we will be fighting for will bear very little resemblance to the Republic of our forefathers.
spot on.
Did anyone say anything about anyone else’s daughters?
I am amazed. The last time this issue came up, I was told by a dozen or more that I was out in the wind for even believing that a re-institution of the draft could take place at all. Now, the replies to my post indicate that nobody read past the first paragraph.
I don’t know WHO (specifically) is pushing it, but I do believe, much from my 6-1/2 years in the Air Force, that the Armed Forces are a laboratory for social experimentation. I also believe that that social experimentation is in the LIBERAL and anti-family direction.
What is the name of that woman who became quite well known in the past several years because she had her legs blown off while piloting a combat helicopter over a hot fire zone? what was the name of that female who wrote the book, “Love My Rifle More Than You” ? She wrote of kicking in doors in urban fighting along with men (she was an Army intelligence). She documented women in combat operations. She also documented some serious immorality among the troops.
Thank you for bringing up the Civil War example. What was done then with respect to instituting a draft was UNCONSTITUTIONAL as was several other actions by Lincoln and company. Not to say immoral, as those who could afford it could “buy” their way out of serving in the northern forces.
Again, cite chapter and verse indicating that a draft is anything BUT a disgrace to our laws and our concept of a free society. Simply citing past historical examples is pretty lame. We locked up thousands of Japanese citizens during WWII. Well hell, if it can be done then lets get to it some more, laws be darned! (sarcasm off)
True, but President Bush should have expanded the military immediately after Sept 11th. Even with reenlistment numbers up, units are feeling the stress and strain of multiple deployments. We need a few more divisions, to offset the current deployment rotation, and to refit our major strike units.
President Bush and all the other “great thinkers” underestimated the Iraq insurgency, and are now in some sort of weird collective denial about troop and equipment readiness. Now they have the so called “war czar” out there floating trial balloons for a “draft”.
I think if you read the stories of Betty (?) Zane and others like her in that era, then you’d quickly agree that women have well served our nation in time of war.
But, you should place what I said in the context of war. In all our war, ANY American should be willing to fight and defend.
As commander in chief in time of war, it was a rational (and constitutional) act for Lincoln to initiate the calling out of the militia and for Roosevelt to control a suspect population. (They call it profiling....something we should be doing at our terminals and ports.)
Historic examples of militia being called out to protect their nation/communities are more than sufficient evidence that the nation expected the able-bodied to defend.
You are a retired military chaplain? This is not picking at you, but I was sent to an Air Force chaplain in 1979 by my squadron commander. I had completed all requirements for graduation from a non commissioned officers leadership training school. The graduation “ceremony” was required, however; couldn’t graduate without attendance. It was actually a liquor and dance event at the NCO Club, during which the diploma issuing ceremony would take place. We were even REQUIRED to bring a date; of course, one could bring his spouse.
When I requested that the diplomas be issued and then those of us who neither attend drinking parties or dances be excused, I was sent to a CHAPLAIN(!) who tried to convince me that drinking and dancing was perfectly fine. He really did try! I didn’t bite. Hey, even my daughters are willing to defend. They are very good with firearms, too. But they are not willing to live modern military co-ed life, and they are not willing to compromise their homes.
It sounds like we agree on fighting and defending in extremity.
As for what a chaplain did years ago, I’m glad you stuck up for your principles. I would agree with the commander that there are excellent esprit-de-corps reasons for attending unit functions. I would agree that a commander can even require attendance at those functions.
There is no commander, however, who can require you to consume alcohol.
I would recommend attending a team-building event, but would commend you for attending while maintaining your principles about consuming alcohol.
all the men will have to leave the country. I would never serve under a power hungry amazon like that.
Actual service isn't really necessary, -- just a short basic boot camp type obligation -- 8 weeks say, at the age of 18, -- would do the trick, and probably double volunteer enlistments.
Calling up the militia as per Article I Section 8 is in effect a draft, and its necessity is explained by the opening lines of the 2nd, -- a militia being '-- necessary to the security of a free state, --".
Service to our country is required by our oath of Citizenship. -- Anyone is free to leave that thinks this concept is a disgrace to our laws and our free society.
Perhaps this is just preparing citizens for the need if one or more of our cities are nuked?
