Officials go with the flow (LA elected officials largest water hogs during drought)
LA Times ^ | 8/10/07 | Duke Helfand

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa challenged residents this summer to "change course" and slash their water use by 10% in the face of a historic drought.

But records show that the mayor and several other top city officials have long been heavy water users themselves.

In Villaraigosa's case, even if he had made a 10% reduction at the two homes where he has lived since winning election in 2005, he still would have used nearly twice as much water as comparable properties in the vicinity.

City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo and Councilman Tony Cardenas surpassed the mayor, using more than twice the number of gallons over the last two years as typical property owners in their parts of town.

In fact, a review of Department of Water and Power documents shows that at least nine of the city's 18 elected leaders used higher than average amounts of water -- sometimes a little, other times a lot -- over the last two years.

Delgadillo, the largest user, consumed 2.7 times as much water at his home near Hancock Park as similar owners in central Los Angeles -- 890,120 gallons compared to a median of 328,524, according to figures provided by the DWP.

During that period, Delgadillo's water service was shut off briefly after he and his wife failed to pay their utility bill.

The DWP said it was too early to tell if any officials had cut back since the mayor called for greater conservation in June.

It's the elites. They clearly don't intend to live by the rules they want to impose on everyone else.

Feh.

I wonder if they would support a billing change for residential water users so that those who hit a high second tier of use would pay triple the charge of the first tier? I bet they would not support it for water or for electric.

Reminds me of that fat pig San Diego had for a mayor a while back, can't recall her name, Maureen something. In a drought she was piously claiming low water usage, until she was busted having two water meters on her property. Of course the one with the least water usage was the public one.

I know Burbank has a 2nd tier system...the price goes up 30%. I am not sure about a third tier or LA’s billing structure.

And the point is .....?

It’s very simple. If you don’t want these people to live like kings, at the expense of everyone else, while lecturing on the virtues of living simply, don’t elect them. But keep in mind that the next ones elected will do the same. Whaddya think elective office is for if not to live like kings and queens? Why else would so many elective offices exist?

We're trying to get that here for water. There is a bit of a break on electric but not much of one, nor for 'time of day' usage charges. From what I have seen, people do make an effort to conserve when such systems are in place and it does reward those that take measures to conserve water and electricity.

My power bill does seem to be lower....not sure if its because of the milder summer this year, or the CF light bulbs.

We’ve had such a mild and wet summer that both water and electric usage are minimal here. But then, August isn’t over yet!
