I hope that you are wrong, so I’ll continue to back Hunter.

Your points are well-made.

I like Fred but I must ask, “What the hell is he waiting on!”

Obviously, he didn't want to declare before the Ames Straw Poll, Romney's got that all locked up, and has for many months. A declared candidacy by Thompson, followed by a poor showing in Ames would be bad, but a non-declaration and even a respectable third place would be a plus.

There was also talk about waiting for the next season of "Law and Order" to start, so his fellow actors on that show would still get the residuals from the reruns. Those stations that rerun older "L&A"s would be able to run pre-Thompson episodes.

It seems wise to wait, everyone else started way too early. That costs just that much more money and annoys a lot of people.

Despite what the article implies, I don’t see them “lining up to support Thompson. Land said favorable things but will not endorse. Dobson is “reasssing” his negative view of FDT. Weyrich and Baur like him, but they have not endorsed either.

I see this article as an attempt to create a bandwagon effect rather than reporting on the presence of an already-rolling band wagon.

However, many strong Republicans haven’t even heard of Hunter because he has not been in a TV drama series.

Neither have Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, or Ron Paul. They've got numbers that Duncan Hunter envies.

Hunter's been in Congress since 1981. He's had ample opportunity to have offered himself to both the Sunday talking head shows, and the three 24/7 news channels that are always looking to fill dead space. It's his fault that nobody's heard of him.

“Tthe issues with Hunter, Paul, Tanc and the rest have nothing to do with Fred being recognized from TV.”

I beg to differ..people that do not keep up with politics would never know who Fred Thompson was unless they saw him on the show he is on..Believe it or not he is no more know than Duncan Hunter as far as the public go..And the media is pushing him all day every day..I really do not think Thompson is as strong of a candidate as Hunter..and I also think he is waiting so he won’t have to be in the debates on TV along with the others. People will see how weak he is..Besides that the health issue is a real concern to me..Who would take his place if he got really ill would it be McCain the one he would likely make VP if by any chance he did win?

I agree with you all the way. Many people give the most cursory of attention to the positions held by the candidates. I am troubled by Thompson’s reticence to leap into the fray when he’s afraid he’ll lose in a straw poll. What does that portend for a run against the Democrat machine?

“However, many strong Republicans haven’t even heard of Hunter because he has not been in a TV drama series. I like Fred, but I think that if conservatives knew the facts about Hunter, they just might change their minds.”

I like Hunter but if he want media coverage HE will have to make some news to cover. Still at 1% and almost broke isn’t news.

Nobody but Hunter can do it.

If I was giving him campaign advice I would urge him to get to the Rustbelt states and start selling his Fair-Trade message.

He should be calling the UAW in Detroit and have a townhall type meeting with autoworkers. Even if only a few hundred show up, if he is received well it will get news coverage and perhaps some word of mouth support.

He has nothing to lose and his message will never get out unless he does something fast.

despite his anemic fundaising efforts -- in its first month his campaign raised only $3 million instead of a hoped for $5 million -

LOL! The same carp keeps getting picked up and repeated from writer to writer. I guess they don't bother with FACT checking anymore.

Voted YES on Social Security Lockbox & limiting national debt. (measure failed)

Voted YES on allowing Roth IRAs for retirees.

Voted YES on allowing personal retirement accounts.

Voted YES on deducting Social Security payments on income taxes.

Those are the votes listed on the Lib site.

Social Security- official position 2002
Social Security

Senator Thompson is a cosponsor of legislation to create a ?Social Security Lockbox? to prevent the surpluses in the Social Security Trust Fund from being spent on government programs other than Social Security. While Democrats have successfully filibustered this legislation in the Senate, Republicans have committed to protecting the Social Security surplus from being raided, and have passed budgets in each of the last two years that balance without touching one penny of the Social Security surplus.

...

The bipartisan plan that Senator Thompson has endorsed would put the Social Security program on the path to long-term solvency and would establish an individual savings account for every worker under the age of 55. This proposal represents one effort to reach across party lines and craft a solution that will enable Social Security to provide for our grandchildren like it did for our grandparents.

It makes me wonder why the MSM is so behind Fred Thompson they are saying things that are not true.

The MSM is NOT 'behind Fred Thompson'. They are against him, because that's the wish of Her Heinous, who sees him as the biggest threat to her desire for the Presidency. Why do you think there have been so many negative stories about him in the last month. They keep throwing things against the wall, hoping desperately that something will stick, and shake his supporters loose.

I do not think Fred is a big threat to Hillary I think the media wants us to believe that..As a matter a fact I have not read or heard anything bad about Fred...He is a nice guy but not my choice for president..I want a family man like Duncan Hunter a man who was married to the same women for many years and a man that know what our service men are going through today,he did the same back when..he is a great American and I can honestly say I will pray all day every day for him to become my next president..I will keep sending articles and things to every one i know..Nothing will change my mind about Duncan not unless he denounces God..

Same story “he’s weak”, “He’s lazy” etc...

His wait has real reasons, not the one’s about he is avoiding or lazy or the whole litany of stuff being said.

Look if it were up to just being on TV, why are the top candidates there as well in the same number range.

Maybe Hunter has a better record or whatever for some in the conservative base, but better or stronger candidate, I think it’s a stretch. Candidates have to be a whole package, including the part of being recognizable and electable in the big race.

I support that 100%. I think we have been \blessed with several good men in the GOP field, and a couple of, well, just a couple of whatevers...

I could easily live with Hunter. I wish he would have stepped up back during the Dole era. Keep of the good fight.
