YouNewsTV Story Published: Aug 8, 2007 at 12:56 PM PDT Story Updated: Aug 8, 2007 at 5:06 PM PDT By KOMO Staff Watch the story WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- Investigators here say an Army soldier who deserted from Fort Lewis, Wash. is suspected of crashing into another vehicle and killing a 10-year-old boy.
Westminster police arrested Joshua Beadle, 21, for investigation of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
Officials say Beadle ran a red light on Friday and slammed into a Ford Expedition, ejecting 10-year-old Cole Collins from the SUV. The boy was not wearing a seat belt and died at a nearby hospital.
Cole and his best friend, Creg Huape were riding home with Creg's uncle from a skating rink. Creg and his uncle were not seriously injured.
"His seatbelt was stuck. It was jammed, and he was trying to get it on," said Huape. "Then my Uncle John yelled, 'Watch out' and we started flipping over and rolling."
Police say at first Beadle gave them a false name and date of birth and said he was the passenger, not the driver. However, witnesses identified him as the driver who ran the red light.
Beadle was arrested once before by Westminster police for driving with a suspended license.
Beadle as assigned to the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, 4th Stryker Combat Team based at Fort Lewis. He was a private in the Army and has been charged with desertion.
"I just hope he goes to prison for the rest of his life," said Huape. "He killed my best friend."
