Obama blasts shadow fundraising group

OAKLAND -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama publicly urged his supporters today not to contribute to independent and unregulated groups - particularly so-called 527 organizations -- that are currently raising money to aid his cause, saying that if backers give directly to his campaign instead, "we'll all be better off.''

The Illinois senator's comments came in response to a Chronicle story published today that detailed an effort by wealthy Bay Area backers to create a 527 group, independent of the campaign, to raise large donations and expand voter registration and turnout for Obama in the February 2008 California presidential primary.

Obama, campaigning in Oakland, also said if he were president he would "probably" invite San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds to the White House to recognize the outfielder's career home run record as "a remarkable achievement.''

But the morning after Bonds' became Major League Baseball's all-time home run leader despite suspicions he used performance-enhancing drugs, Obama said a "cloud" regarding steroids and other drugs hangs over baseball and other sports.

"I would like to see our sports leagues recognize that children look up to sports stars more than probably any other individuals ... and right now, I'm not sure our kids are learning the right lessons.''

Obama's comments today came at a press conference after he worked in East Oakland alongside a home health care worker as part of the Service Employees International Union "walk a day in our shoes" campaign to focus attention on the problems and needs of working Americans.

Obama responded to questions about a 527 group called "Vote Hope 2008" . . .
