Today marks one year from the official start of the Beijing Summer Olympics 2008. China started the 365 day countdown with a grand event in Tiananmen Square.
International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge marked the start of the one-year countdown with a lavish Chinese-style ceremony that stared on the 8th day, of the 8th month at 8 PM and 8 minutes 8 seconds.
Eight is a lucky number in China.
But Tiananmen Square has not been lucky in China, especially for those seeking democratic and human rights reforms.
Chinese tanks mowed down pro-democracy demonstrators 18 years ago right where tonights Olympic ceremonies commenced.

Weeks? More like decades. Appertantly it isn’t even as bad as it used to be which is shocking because I just got back from there. You can’t see the sky on a clear day and buildings a quarter mile away vanish into the haze. Its horrific and I don’t see how high-level athletes can compete at anything approaching their best in that filth.
Why not have Al and others tell the Chicoms that unless they clean up their products,(food et al,Toys are Us stuff), American will not participate. And then have Al personally fly there in his personal jet and tell the Commies to clean up their air while they are at it. Many good things can come out of this.......Think about it.
