Firefighters may sue over pride parade participation {San Diego)
San Diego UNION-TRIBUNE ^ | August 7, 2007 | Pauline Repard

SAN DIEGO – Four San Diego city firefighters have filed a complaint with the state saying their superiors forced them to participate in last month's gay pride parade, where they became targets of obscene gestures and sexual comments.

An attorney for the four sent a letter to the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing on Aug. 1, requesting the right to file a sexual harassment lawsuit against the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Fire Chief Tracy Jarman issued a statement yesterday saying she apologized to the men and plans to have the city's Equal Employment Investigative Office look into their complaints.

“They were getting nowhere through regular channels,” said their attorney, Charles LiMandri, West Coast director of the Thomas More Law Center.

The Thomas More center, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., is described on its Web site as a nonprofit public-interest law firm that promotes Christian values and freedoms through litigation and media attention. The center has been involved in the fight against removal of the Mount Soledad cross.

Fire department spokesman Maurice Luque said the fire crew was chosen because its fire Station 5 on Ninth Avenue in Hillcrest is in the community where the parade took place. Luque said another crew had volunteered, but bowed out for personal reasons, including a family death, the day before.

In statements filed with the state, the men said that along the parade route, they were subjected to offensive and lewd comments such as, “You can put out my fire,” and saw men blowing kisses at them. Then, they said, they had to endure protesters who yelled at them that homosexuality was a sin. Some comments were too graphic to print.

Didn't realize that anyone in this country was ever forced to participate in a parade - sounds like these firefighters didn't have such a good time there.

I see that - the title search was “exact”, didn’t pick it up - this is from the Union-Tribune, a pro-homosexual rag IMO.

I am wondering if the ACLU will be in their corner on this one?

The former chief of the Seattle police dept used to participate in the gay pride parade, on duty and in uniform. Several of his men were disciplined for participating in a christian function while on duty and in uniform.
Bet the same would happen to those firemen in San Diego, particularly as the former SPD chief, Norm Stamper, came from San Diego PD.

Alternative life style functions by public employees should be volunteer.

He has a point that he need not participate however my community pays taxes and having the fire truck for our 4th of July parade and feeding the firefighters bbq afterwards as they let the children in the community see th equipment up close is important. I’d hate to lose it like everything else taxpayers are forced to give-up.

In the peoples republic of Madison Wisconsin, back in the day, we had a threefer - an Hispanic, lesbian Fire Chief. Dunno if she’s still there. Had a face for radio, for sure.

Hint: When searching use a single word as a search term not the whole thing.
Examples, I used only the word "firefighters". Xcamel used "gay" which is a liberal cover name for homosexual.
Both found most of the threads.

It took a lawsuit for Jarman to wake up and smell the roses. Sheesh!

No, I only take the title in quotes, that saves on the c/p. Any thread that’s even on the same subject seems to be a pet peeve of “xcamel”, admins can remove what they think is a duplicate thread.

Are there any straight female fire fighters? Are female fire chiefs by definition lesbian?

At least around here there are far more "straight" female firefighters than lez's. There is only one female chief in our county, I trained her years ago. I also trained her husband, and soon will have their son in an academy. She's not a Lez. She got the position though hard work, getting the needed training, and putting in enough years. I can't speak of Californicate and similar lefty places.

Baladas, pay no attention to the man behind the monitor.
He is addicted to finding previous threads.
He is the Commander and Chief of the SAPPS.

Prior to there being mods, the members would have jumped in your shorts big time for wasting band width and their time. Seems to be much less concern now that Jim has unlimited space.

Do what you want, if Jim objects, I'm sure he's let you know.

This one (the fire chief) must have Borg ancestry.
