This doesn’t make sense. Gibran was raised a Maronite Christian. His best known work, The Prophet, is a thinly veiled (and very positive) story about Abdul Baha, the founder of the Baha’i faith (an offshoot of Islam, it is considered heretical as it doesn’t accept that Mohammed was the final prophet). The Tenanbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, a primarily Jewish organization, is heavily involved in this school.
Yes it’s multicultural. Yes it emphasizes Arab history, language and culture, but notably not Islam. Most of Gibran’s writings were about things other than Islam in the Arab world. In fact he is thought by most to be anti-religion based on personal experience with corrupt Eastern Orthodox Christian and Ottoman Empire Islamic officials.

There are certainly quite a few warning signs there, although Gibran's name isn't one of them. The whole "critical thinking" and "Socratic approach" allows the adult to lead the kiddies to any conclusion desired depending on the questions asked. It saves the effort of having a curriculum to examine because there isn't one, at least not written down.
I would be very wary of a curriculum that leads sixth-graders to consider "world events" in the light of their nearly non-existent real world knowledge and those bits of information they are fed and manipulated into considering. That isn't education, IMHO, it's indoctrination.

Despite the New York Dept. of Education Chancellor's assertions to the contrary, KGIA will even bow to shari'a in its cafeteria, where halal food will be served. This is a clear incursion of Islamic religious principles into the public sector, a reason recently cited by Mr. Klein as justification for shutting the institution down. This thing needs to be stopped NOW! The department of education wants New York taxpayers to foot the bill for this? They truly have gone mad!!!

I just scanned through the entire 29 pages of the Summary. No mention anywhere of Christianity or the involvement of any Arab Christian organizations, though the overwhelming majority of non-Mohammedan Arabs are Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox or Coptic Christians. The a substantial majority of Arabs here in the States are Christians. I do note that the Mohammedan Attorneys’ Association plays a role, however. :(

The sad part is that Khalil Gibran was not a Muslim, but a new-agey fallen-away Christian.
