This just disgusts me. If it was meant to illicit sympathy for this family, it did not work. So many people who work full time and do not receive free breakfasts and lunches at school can not come CLOSE to having $125 per week to spend on food alone, plus all day to be creative in food preparation.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS

“Shepard calls ahead on her cell phone to round up carriers”

Who pays for the cell phone?

The food budget does goe up in the summer, but I’m surprised her 10 pounds of hamburger only makes four meals. That’s 2 1/2 pounds per meal! For only five people? Ten pounds would be 10 meals around here ;-)

It’s too bad home economics classes are no longer taught in school. I think the mom in the story needs some advice, and I think the writer probably grew up in a home where pinching pennies on the grocery budget would have been exotic.

Every post in this thread is right on the money -

The oldest ones can work, and why is welfare paying for kids over 18 anyway - shouldn't they get their own welfare allowances? OR A JOB????

I am so tired of this welfare state of affairs in America. Too much Gimme and not enough Give.

bing cherries, tv dinners, shrimp cocktail?

And what is healthful about TV dinners, Kool Aid and frozen pizzas???

I thought food stamps were just supposed to cover milk, cheese, eggs, beans, tuna, juice, peanut butter...stuff like that? Granted, I have to admit, I’ve never seen a food stamp...are they stamps?

No sympathy from me either. Cry me a river lady, I’d love to blow $500/month on groceries.

Who writes this stuff anyway?

People on welfare with 12 square feet of soil at their disposal should be taught how to start and maintain a vegetable garden.

Seed packets generally cost less than one dollar and can grow hundreds of pounds of produce.

Perhaps this story will help enlighten others who don’t understand how their tax dollars are being spent. When we hear this election season how we must do more to help the poor, about how women and children are at the bottom of the poverty level, and how we must spend more to get them out of poverty, that we must have government health care for the poor remember this story. She gets help with her cost of housing, she spends more money on food than most of us, does her government housing include heat, air and water, she may have gotten free child care, free medical and dental. Makes sumcks out of thoes of us who try to support our families, then help to support her.

She should have put those planning skills to work before she got knocked up 5 times.

Shepard pauses, her bad foot still smarting from a slip on the ice while walking (staggering?) home from a party in December.

Maybe her 18 year old son could get a job. Also, she is feeding 3 kids, not 5.

I assume the younger two attend public school in Omaha, which provides breakfast free and reduced cost lunches for 40 cents, which comes to $20/month, leaving $460 to prepare 272 meals at $1.69 each.

She receives $6,000 per year of our hard-earned tax dollars. According to frac.org, there were 26,294,464 receiving food stamps in 2006. That's almost $160 BILLION!

Factor in administrative costs, and probably more like $250 BILLION. I sure hope we don't end up with a Democrat in the Whitehouse. Surf and turf for all!

It’s amazing.. she’s getting $500 a month for food without working for it and is still complaining! Gotta love that entitlement mentality.

I have a family of five and spend wayyyy less than that.
If you really want to stretch your dollars use coupons and follow sales! My husband loves it.. we eat so well on so little.

This site will show you how if you’re just beginning..

Fresh vegetables and fruit helped drive up grocery costs 4.6 percent in June compared with a year ago. That's faster than the 2.7 percent inflation rate during that period.

How many times do I have to hear "faster than the rate of inflation" before Washington realizes their inflation rate is wrong?

What ever happened to family and friends helping out. In my family nearly all of us at one time or another hit hard times and we all pitched in and helped that person.

We didn't go on welfare or receive food stamps.

$6000 a year in food specific welfare, another $6000 a year in general welfare, a free 4 bedroom public apartment that probably costs us another $8 or 10,000 a year, free medical care for all of them, free public school for 5 bastard children - at least one of whom seems to already have one bastard of his own.

All told this woman and her brood are raking in at least $50,000 a year, probably more like $75,000, for nothing at all!

Offering these welfare queens a $50,000 lump sum tax free and a new car in exchange for being sterilized would be the best money we ever spent.

Nationwide, roughly 26 million people receive food stamps .... Half the recipients are children.

13 million adults on food stamps! Clearly we need more illegal aliens to do the work Americans won't do.

The World-Herald keeps publishing articles trying to stir up sympathy for our less fortunate brethren, but somehow reality gets in the way. There was an earlier story about the travails of a high school dropout with two bastards from two different men (in the picture accompanying the article she wears a shirt that says “I like nice boys, but I love bad boys.”) There was another story about a 17-year-old high school freshman — he spent three years smoking weed and skipping school. He blames the world for not paying attention to him.

Some of you people that keep talking about spending less than $500 per month on food to feed a family are probably not considering what you spend out. Even on drinks, concession stand hot dogs during your kids’ games, etc. This woman is budgeting $500 for all their food. My husband and I sometimes spend as little as $75 a week at the grocery store, sometimes as much as $400 to feed our FIVE kids. Yes, we pay for it. But, so what. This woman takes a cab, while I can jump in to any one of our cars. Plus, so much more we take for granted with our middle-class suburban lives! Like, what if one of her kids wants to play football on a peewee league? It cost $150 per child to sign our kids up, multiple trips to Dick’s for about $175 each in practice/game clothes. Not to mention no car to get there. And, my God! Did anyone notice the woman lives in an apartment??? How can you compare the budgeting you do for food to pay the mortgage payment for a real home? Plus, we have equity, spouses to carry our bags.

And, what of her children’s college tuitions?? Pre-college? (For example, we spent a few grand so our 11 year old could go to a good college this summer). Have her children even been to summer camp?

What is worse is that what is happening to our nation that we don’t give a shit anymore. This story is about a woman with an abusive ex-husband struggling to raise her children in an urban project. Perhaps it would be better for all of us if this were more “newsworthy.” I am tired of hearing about people getting murdered, aren’t you?

I can’t believe I am a lawyer (a mostly stay-at-home mom one raising her five kids on her husbands salary as a foreman carpenter!!!), always thought of as unfeeling by trade, and I have to be the one to say this?

You blame her for taking your tax dollars? What about the billions of dollars the government wastes every year? And if she doesn’t get food stamps, then what? Uncle Sam going to issue us a refund? Don't forget, many woman receiving food stamps are in fact underemployed (minimum to low wage) woman who pay taxes themselves. I feel my time is better spent considering how the price of necessities has risen so dramatically in the last decade while minimum wage has risen less than a dollar.
