Jackson faces jury trial after arrest over gun shop demonstration

MARKHAM, Ill. - It's familiar territory for the Rev. Jesse Jackson: Facing legal trouble for his activist politics. This time it's for protesting gun sales he says provide Chicago gang members and criminals easy access to firearms, with deadly consequences.

Jackson, 65, has been arrested about 15 times during his career as a civil rights leader, dating back to the 1960s when he worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr., said spokeswoman Rashida Restaino.

On Monday, a relaxed-looking Jackson stood in a light pinstriped suit and asked a judge for a jury trial on misdemeanor trespassing charges stemming from his June arrest outside a gun shop where he was demonstrating in support of tougher gun laws.

Prompted by the shooting deaths of nearly three dozen public school students in Chicago during the last year, Jackson and the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a South Side Catholic priest, have held several protests at Chuck's Gun Shop in south suburban Riverdale.

Cook County Circuit Judge James Rhodes set a Nov. 26 trial date for the men, who were arrested and charged with criminal trespass to property June 23 after refusing to move away from the gun shop's entrance.

If convicted, they could face up to six months in jail, the Cook County state's attorney's office said.

Asked by a reporter how it felt to be back in a courtroom, Jackson said: "It's very formal, very serious." He added that his first arrest was in 1960, when he and several other black students were jailed for trying to use a public library in segregated Greenville, S.C.

If I were the gun shop owner I would file a civil suit against this POS and try to extract as much money as I could.

You might get a judgement against him ... but you’d never see a red cent of it. His buddy Fat Al $harpton knows how to beat that rap.

DFU SONG: Follow the Yellow Brick Road (appropriate for Jesse Jackson on King's birthday)
DFU SONGS | 1-2005 | Lyrics, Doug from Upland

Posted on 01/17/2005 11:52:13 AM PST by doug from upland

This is a rewrite of a song from 5 years ago. How time flies. J.C. Watts called Jesse a race-baiting poverty pimp. Watts was right on the mark. When the victim mentality goes away, the race-baiting poverty pimps will finally go away.

MIDI - FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - scroll down to WIZARD OF OZ section

(note: I know that the original song really has nothing to do with the content of this parody, but it is the only song I found where "race-baiting poverty pimp" will fit. :)

Race-baiting poverty pimp…race-baiting poverty pimp
Reverend Jesse Jackson is a race-baiting poverty pimp
Where cameras roll, he's there to be found
His pearly whites seems are always around
It is time we say to him his message is gonna go down

Let's tell him we're rejecting those people dividing by race
Don't be afraid, we're stepping right up and slapping them in the face

His message has always been crystal clear
He's filling his people's heads with fear
He makes us fight among ourselves, it true
Jesse, it's time you are finally through
Jesse, it's time you are finally through

It's time to say to Jesse, that race-baiting poverty pimp
Your fifteen minutes came and went, and now you are looking quite limp

I've got a bumper sticker that's telling him "Run Jesse Run"
It's on the front, I'm warning him now, if I see him he is done
Of course I am kidding, but he is slime
Why would anybody send a dime
He's legendary as the shake down king
Where he appears, trouble he will bring
Where he appears, trouble he will bring

I'd love to see up skyward a wonderful colorful blimp
And read the words "Hey Jesse, you're a race-baiting poverty pimp"

I have nothing but contempt for this shakedown artist/racist, but....protesting outside a gun shop? In the eyes of the law it should be no different than protesting outside an abortion clinic and folks do that all the time.

Jesse “pimp” Jackson is a sorry wretch who does not understand the real world; it’s NOT the guns that are causing the deaths.

The famous African-American poet Tupac Shakur knew that the poor victims “got it by killer preoccupied by being boss.”

He also knew that “revenge is the method, whenever steppin’ keep a weapon close.”

Yes, but they do get arrested when they block the entrance. Jesse was blocking the entrance, which is criminal trespass. He needs jail time.

You make some valid points - but I’m sure they won’t want to incur the wrath of the “community” ergo no jail time.

If firearms in the hands of people dangerous to the black community were Jesse Jackson's concern, you'd think he would've protested the Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland.

Odd that he would draw comparisons between exercising his first amendment rights to limiting others' second amendment rights.

Would that I were on that jury. His trial would be fair and impartial, followed by his immediate execution.

WOW. Chuck is one lucky fellow to get this kind of free publicity. Makes me want to buy a Glock or S&W from him.
