First of all, for anyone who interpreted my comments as somehow questioning whether the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were necessary, you really need to read before you post. I said no such thing.

Second, I actually watched the documentary tonight. And I was surprised that the film actually was more critical of the Japanese government than the U.S. In general, it presented a rather unbiased view (although not entirely) of what survivors experienced during and after the bombings. Some of the footage was very graphic. And a few survivors blamed the Japanese government for the bombings (i.e., we started the war and then lost) as well as the lack of assistance afterwards (some survivors claim discrimination and lack of assistance to this day).

While I was pleasantly surprised at the general tone of the film and found it interesting, I also do not think it was very well done. In fact, it was rather disappointing given that the subject matter should lend itself to a very powerful and moving documentary.

It was pretty well done. Whether one see’s the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as good, bad or indifferent, the fact remains that there were victims of those bombings, and, if nothing else, the video and photo reminders of what can happen should serve as a visual backup for the deterrence that nuclear weapons provide.
