I don’t think Al Quida had a big presence in Iraq prior to the invasion, but overthrowing Saddam made the ground fertile for them.
Our situation is analogous to standing up to a school yard bully only to back down once the fighting starts.

Further, if we reward terrorist tactics a third time (Vietnam, Lebanon, Somalia and then in Iraq), we will demonstrate to an awful lot of a-holes in the world that terrorism ALWAYS WORKS and we will just see more of it.
