Malthus ought to be synonymous with Jeremiah and Cassandra. Little wonder that he's still held in esteem by the modern day prophets of Doom.

The case of Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia comes to mind. Once a productive country with a well fed and well off populace became disenchanted with the political/racial power divide and revolted. Zimbabwe is now destitute, starving and disenchanted with its present political system and helpless in its misery.

Not at all. Cassandra was right but was not widely believed. Malthus was wrong but was widely believed.
