Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said he thinks U.S. troops will be able to come home from Iraq if the temporary increase of troops proves successful.
Alerts Romney said he hopes Gen. David Petraeus' review of U.S. strategy in Iraq will show progress in the Iraq. If that happens, he expects the military to decrease the number of troops in the field.
"If we see the troop surge is working what that will mean is, that we will be able to start to pull back our troops and replace our troops with Iraqi troops," Romney told WKXL. "That's something that has been spoken about for a long time, but if the surge is working it is actually at a point where that kind of replacement can occur and that is obviously what we want to see happen. We want to get our troops out of Iraq as soon as we can and replace them with their own troop capability."
Congress, which is expected to adjourn this week until after the Labor Day holiday, is awaiting an assessment due in September by Ambassador Ryan Crocker and Petraeus by Sept. 15. Their evaluation is expected to shape the administration's next move on the war, including decisions on how many U.S. troops will stay in Iraq, and for how long.

The surge is working, despite the best efforts of the major news networks to undermine the public’s confidence in it. It it is allowed to work, that troops may be coming home soon.
Let the troops do their job. When they come home, they come home, but there's no need to start sending the message that we're looking for the exit sign.
This is just as bad as the silly things Obama has been saying.
Maybe this is why the State Dept was telling the ‘08 candidates to stay out of foreign affairs, especially in a time of war.

Remember Romney wants to run for President and wants to attract attention.
The surge is probably working and Romney is probably trying to use it to his advantage.
Kind of like “See I told you so”
except that Obama doesn’t want Hezbolla to run our health care system :)

How is being pleased that the surge is working the same as Obama proposing to attack an ally in the war on terror?
How is being hopeful about seeing a light at the end of the tunnel now that the surge has a chance for success the same as Obama suggesting it is wise for the US president to meet one on one with the world's rogue dictators like Ahmadenijad, Castro and Chavez?

We've had enough doom and gloom. In my mind, the more people acknowledge progress, speak positively about the mission and lift the morale of the country and our troops, the better it is.

That’s well-put.
Romney is simply saying that the surge may help us achieve victory in Iraq faster and bring our troops home sooner. What’s wrong with that? It’s like some people around here want perpetual war. Some people, like Romney, prefer a swifter victory and point to operations which may help achieve that.
