DETROIT A man who became the subject of a book called "The Radioactive Boy Scout" after trying to build a nuclear reactor in a shed as a teenager has been charged with stealing 16 smoke detectors. Police say it was a possible effort to experiment with radioactive materials.
Hahn's first brush with authorities came in August 1994, after police stopped him during an investigation into neighborhood tire thefts. Officers found radioactive materials, chemicals, rocks, plastic and glass bottles and two exploded pipes in his car, Maierle said.
In a subsequent interview with a state health official, Hahn said he had been trying to produce energy and hoped it would help him earn his Eagle Scout badge, according to the Harper's article.
Hahn received a Scouting merit badge for atomic energy in 1991, the article said.
Maierle said Hahn's 1994 arrest was expunged in 1996. His arrest this week was reported by The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens.

He doesn’t look so good.
Earlier, more complete history on this character.

He did not do enough homework the first time around, and has not learned much. He needed strong alpha sources to make beryllium neutron sources. With fast neutrons he could fission thorium 232. Why would he get back into it now? Is he on AQ's payroll, or is he just crazy?
Not that it matters, since he does not use good lab practice and has probably inhaled alpha sources. He will not live to 45.
Wow. He looks like he took a shotgun blast to the face. Is that really him?
That’s the picture in the linked article. You’d think that once his skin started falling off he’d reconsider his course of action.
This guy should be on the payroll, not outside.
Quite interesting. He has a passion and a long term vision and doesn’t seem to care about the heath risks. Reading the Fox Story and seeing the sores, one should wonder what and where he is hiding his experiments now. There was no danger found so far, but his face tells a different story.
That was a really interesting article, thanks. I checked Wikipedia on him and thought this was an interesting quote as well.
“Hahn had hoped to pursue a nuclear specialist career, but was not even permitted to tour the reactors (Silverstein, 2005). EPA scientists believe that Hahn may have exceeded the lifetime dosage for thorium exposure, but he refused their recommendation that he be examined at Fermilab, a nuclear science facility near Chicago (Silverstein, 1998). Later, Hahn re-enlisted as a Marine.”
This guy really does not want to know how much radiation he has running through his body.
That earlier post had some very detailed information on how he obtained ingredients for his lethal experiments.
Too much information;(
The book was really fasinating.
The kid was brilliant, a complete loner (from a really messed up family.)
Because he was a kid he got away with it the first time, but obviously still has major problems.
Looks like a real-life Trashcan Man from "The Stand".
Yep.
These reporters make the 'nuclear science' merit badge sound like something ominous. Hell, my kids Scout Troop just took a field trip to Dresden last month where (shudder) a dozen Boy Scouts earned their Nuclear Science merit badges.
I guess before long Lurker Jr will be on a list someplace. I mean he's undoubtedly going down the wrong path. What with merit badges in Nuclear Science, Rifle Shooting, and Archery he's certainly one of the most dangerous Boy Scouts on the planet.

Interesting. Thanks very much for the ping.
Probably trying to make an a-bomb this time.
He’s from Detroit. He’s not Muslim, is he?
Judging by the sores on his face, he’s been playing with more than smoke detectors. If those are sores from radiation sickness, he doesn’t have much longer to live.
And a good morning to you child,
MA
I want nothing to do with a guy who is this careless with radioactive materials. If he was around the good stuff he’d pull a Daghlian-Slotin for certain, and probably take other with him.
I work with this stuff, you can’t have the contempt of “familiarity” this guy shows.
