ATLANTA, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Troubled Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick will be honored during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's convention, a group official said.

SCLC president Charles Steele said the religious organization will offer its support to Vick as he faces federal dog-fighting charges, the Atlanta Journal- Constitution reported Friday.

"We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us," Steele said.

The public statement of support from Steele comes as the NFL quarterback has been criticized by many within the black community. Since being indicted on federal charges on July 18, Vick's alleged actions have been condemned by activist Al Sharpton and music executive Russell Simmons.

In addition, most of Vick's merchandising deals have been withdrawn since he began embroiled in the highly publicized investigation. Steele told the newspaper his group is still unclear exactly how it will offer its support to Vick during its 50th anniversary celebration.

I had no idea the SCLC were still around - I thought they were pushed aside as ‘toms’ during the black power days.

Can the SCLC cheapen the cause of fighting actual racism any more than with this unthinking subservience.

It’s OK for blacks to torture/murder dogs. Because of slavery or something...

It’s amazing. OJ, Duke, Tawana Brawley, now Mike Vick. Seems they (and other crusaders) are batting .000 when it comes to high profile cases and fighting for the truth.

They’d support Satan if they found out he was a black.

Okay, that works for dog fighters... but how about us that run Texas Cage Crab Fights?

Gadzooks! Someone delete this... before Bill O'Reilly quotes it as more FR hate speech!

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference should be praying for Vick's immortal soul, and let the courts decide his earthly punishment.

Oh, please don’t forget to add Crystal Magnum, dancing college student and single mother, to your list of illustrious modern black heroes.

Amazing how quick the black community closes rank around any black scoundrel. Any black scoundrel who isn’t a black republican that is.

Of course he will. I understand OJ will also be honored at the same convention...
