The raised beds in the square foot gardening might help.
I plant in frames above the ground and use 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost and 1/3 course vermiculite.

What I do to plants is considered murder in most jurisdictions.

We did Square Foot Gardening in New Jersey, and I really enjoyed it. It’s just too dang hard to fool with one here. The first summer we were in our house, I spent almost the entire time digging up the rocks that had ‘grown’ in the front yard because of the frost heaves of the previous winter! Just keeping the yard nice was enough work, I didn’t want to have to fool with creating and maintaining a garden, too.

I covered my frames with black garden textile. I put the plants or seeds thru holes i cut in it. I don’t really see any weeds. I tell people its more like dusting than weeding. lol.
It looks pretty neat and squared away. The black fabric holds a lot of heat and the plants really stand out against the black surface.

I am in MA and rocks do seem to grow here.

Good Luck.
