WARRENVILLE, Ill., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine Corps ordered 755 more Category I Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles from International Military and Government LLC.

International is a subsidiary of Navistar International Corp. The contract, for the delivery of the vehicles by the end of February 2008, is valued at approximately $414 million.

The additional order brings the total number of MRAPs to 1,971 from International for a cost to the military of more than $1.045 billion.

MRAPs are designed to protect troops from improvised explosive devices and other roadside bombs.

"The urgency to rapidly deliver these life-saving armored vehicles to our military forces is clear," Daniel C. Ustian, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Navistar International Corp., said in a statement. "We are working with the U.S. military and our supply base to increase our production capacity at our facilities to meet the aggressive demand and provide these MRAP vehicles into the hands of our Marines, soldiers and sailors as quickly as possible. Every day of production is critical. We are honored and proud to be providing these mission-critical vehicles to the U.S. military."

Developed in conjunction with Plasan Sasa, International integrates a modular armor concept for the vehicles. Plasan Sasa specializes in armor solutions.

The MRAP incorporates a V-shaped crew compartment on top of the heavy-duty truck chassis. Company officials say the design best deflects blasts away from the truck to minimize crew impact.

“end of February 2008”? Hell, during WWII, the American people turned out thousands of tanks in a month. What’s the hold up?

Email The U.S. military unveiled this week a concept combat vehicle that combines new blast-deflection technology with the safety features of a commercially available truck and NASCAR engineering.
Everything from the materials to seating configuration has been rethought.
Built on the skeleton of a Ford F-350 truck, the vehicle is called the ULTRA AP (Armored Patrol). Its builders melded some of the latest advancements in vehicle defense with the maneuverability and safety features of an “off-the-shelf” truck to develop a concept vehicle that may one day replace the familiar Humvee in the battlefield.

Comment: this would have been an interesting way to go. NASCAR engineers know a thing or 2 about high velocity impacts. Note the date of the article though. Nothing appears to have come from this research.
