Archaeologists have discovered what they think are ruins of an Aztec pyramid razed by vengeful Spanish conquerors...

Is this one of the paramids’ the peaceful, loving Aztecs used when they cut the hearts out of live victims? Those mean old Spaniards made them stop!

“One of Mexico City’s most crime-ridden districts...”

Soon coming to an American town near you: that’s what things will look like soon enough.

Obviously you have missed something important about the Aztecs. As described in this article, they were “deeply religious.” (sarc.) Their devotion to live human sacrifice attests to their spirituality, and may suggest the reason that neighboring tribes that had been repeatedly made victims of Aztec savagery allied themselves with Cortez in defeating the Aztecs.
I recommend reading “Columbus & Cortez, Conquerors for Christ,” by Prof. John Eidsmoe, a product of deep academic and literary research based heavily on Spanish documents and a book on the life of Cortez authored by his secretary.
