“Computers Back Up At LAX, Int’l Processing Resumes”
http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_223220245.html ^ | Aug 11, 2007 9:53 pm US/Pacific

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CBS) LOS ANGELES About 6,000 international passengers were stranded for as long as five hours Saturday on planes and in terminals at Los Angeles International Airport because a computer shutdown prevented them from passing through customs, authorities said.

The computer went down at about 2 p.m., according to a statement from Los Angeles World Airports, which operates Los Angeles International Airport.

“At 9 p.m., federal officials were holding approximately 6,000 passengers on about two dozen international arriving aircraft until they can be cleared through the five Federal Inspection Stations at LAX,” according to the statement.

The passengers were stranded in four airport terminals and on runways starting at about 1:30 p.m. because of a breakdown in a computer system that contains names of arriving passengers and law enforcement data about them including arrest warrants, said Mike Fleming, a Customs and Border Protection spokesman.

“That system allows our officers to make decisions on who we can allow to enter the United States,” Fleming said. “You just don’t know by looking at them.””

You also have to think about the amount of real chatter the gov’t is listening to. And maybe moles on the inside. They can’t be totally going by some website posts. I’m sure the wiretapping and survelliance of the BB’s are helping them with some information.

they have people on this stuff 24/7. i think on this thread we just barely have the tip of the iceberg compared to what DHS knows.

it’s a slippery one thats for sure.

First, you need a clear understanding of the ‘dirty’ bomb. The immediate destruction is caused by a conventional explosion. Mixed into this are radioactive materials. These will not cause mass deaths. They will slow down the clean-up

But think about an infected area being cordoned off by men in spaceman suits, panic from ppl trying to leave the area, unaffected people leaving the city causing major traffic jams. i think the chaos factor would be bigger than the fatalities.

If you are not satisfied with the content of this thread, perhaps you would be more comfortable starting one of your own so that you could be in charge.

I would be very grateful if you could at least take your disagreements to PM with either the list owner or whichever poster you have an issue with so that the rest of us do not have to be a party to it.

Thank you.

“Worldwide Internet, Al Qaida
Exposing on-line Jihadists”

By Judi McLeod
Friday, August 10, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “When it comes to capitalizing on the Worldwide Internet, Al Qaida has shot up to the top of the list in the savvy category.

Jihadists working the Internet are prolific, so much so that they could easily borrow a line in popular use during the Cold War: “They’re everywhere!”

“In six years I have bookmarked some 6,000-+ Jihadist websites and the list is still growing,” says Archangel, code name for an online Jihadist-tracking expert.

Finding terrorists in cyber space has become a popular pursuit on the Internet with scores of cyber sleuths up late at night searching on-line for terrorists while their families sleep.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Terrorists don’t just recruit on-line, they use the Internet to fund terrorism and to disseminate propaganda.

What is to stop them from sabotaging Western websites?”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Jihadists are capable of that kind of cunning.

Meanwhile, cyber sleuths hunting terrorists on-line are a valuable tool in the ongoing International War Against Terrorism.”

Interesting tidbit in the case of the men arrested in Goose Creek, SC:

http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2007/08/sc-2-linked-to-.html

There’s been another strange development regarding the searching of a home in the investigation into Yousseff Samir Megahed and Ahmed Abda Mohamed, arrested for allegedly carrying pipe bombs in their vehicle just miles from a military facility in Goose Creek, South Carolina. According to this report, the home was also searched some years back during the investigation into Sami Al-Arian

Opinion: Quite the coincidence...hmmm?

OPINION:

Yes, that is interesting.

The case has kind of gone quiet, but I believe it’s due to the investigation still in progress.

“South Florida Deputy Fatally Shot”

Updated: August 10th, 2007 09:12 PM EDT

local10.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Sheriff Ken Jenne mapped out how investigators believe a Broward Sheriff’s Office sergeant was shot and killed early Friday morning in a Walgreens parking lot in Pompano Beach.

Investigators believe that Sgt. Chris Reyka spotted an automobile with a stolen license plate and approached the car before being shot around 1:30 a.m.

“He looked at the car and saw that the car’s license did not belong to that car,” said Jenne at an afternoon press conference Friday.

As Reyka got out of his car, Jenne said they believe the passenger in the car got out and shot the sergeant “in very rapid succession.”

“My detectives tell me that there were 10 casings found,” said Jenne. He also stated that Reyka’s weapon was not drawn and that he did not use his police radio at any time, he added.

“At least five of those shots hit him. We believe the shooter came forward in an aggressive manner. The last shots came within 2 to 4 feet because of the powder burns that were there,” said Jenne.

The shooter got back into the car and then the car drove off. Surveillance from the Isle of Capri casino captured a white, four-door sedan with tinted windows and Florida license plate F16-8UJ, the BSO said. The video captured the vehicle traveling north on Powerline Road within minutes of the shooting, and investigators believe it might be the vehicle that was involved in the shooting.

Reyka, 51, was pronounced dead at North Broward Medical Center about 4 a.m.”

“Florida Suspect in Deputy Shooting, Practiced Shooting In Head”

Updated: August 8th, 2007 12:39 PM PDT

Story by local10.com

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The suspect in the shooting of a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy had targets from gun ranges hanging on the walls in his home and told investigators he didn’t want to go to jail because he didn’t want to miss the birth of his baby, Sheriff Ken Jenne said during a news conference Tuesday.

Deputy Maury Hernandez was shot Monday in the 3700 block of Pembroke Road, moments after he notified dispatch at 11:48 a.m. that he was stopping a motorcyclist, later identified as David Maldonado, for running several red lights.

Jenne said that witnesses at a motorcycle shop reported Hernandez, 28, getting out of his unmarked vehicle and identifying himself as law enforcement in a “non-confrontational” manner before Maldonado pushed Hernandez, ran from the deputy, then turned and shot him. Hernandez was wearing plain clothes on his way to work as part of his undercover assignment with the selective enforcement team.

“There’s no question that Maldonado knew that he was dealing with a member of law enforcement,” said Jenne. “Witnesses heard Detective Hernandez identify himself, saw him display his star, and most telling, the suspect has told us that he knew he was dealing with a member of law enforcement,” said Jenne.

Moments later, witnesses said they heard gunshots, he said.

“I was driving by and I saw the officer on the (ground),” one witness told Local 10’s Glenna Milberg. “He was bent over with his face in the grass, and you could just see the pain in his face.”

David Maldonado Jenne said Maldonado fired two shots, one of them striking Hernandez from about 40 yards away. Jenne said neighbors told BSO investigators that Maldonado often practiced shooting at the gun range and practiced shooting in the head on a regular basis.”

“Flight ends in flames
Hot air balloon crashes in fields north of Winnipeg”

By SHANNON VANRAES, SUN MEDIA

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “”I heard a small explosion,” said Mark Urbanczyk, who lives across the road from the crash site. “Just as I got to the end of the driveway, the whole balloon exploded. It was just a huge explosion.””

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “He said the craft was supposed to land near the Perimeter Highway, but was unable to find a smooth landing surface as winds picked up.

Hildebrand said the basket of the balloon bounced along the ground several times before tipping onto its side and catching fire. He added most of the basket was destroyed by the blaze.

The TSB is investigating the cause of the fire.”

“US Declares Lebanese Group Terrorists”
August 12, 2007 - 3:01am
(AP)

By MATTHEW LEE
Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration has blacklisted as a “foreign terrorist organization” a Lebanese Islamist group blamed for major fighting at a refugee camp, the Associated Press has learned.

The State Department is expected to announce the designation against al-Qaida-inspired Fatah al-Islam, which is suspected of having links with Syria, on Monday.

The designation imposes financial and travel restrictions on the group and its members, officials said Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the designation is not yet public.

The officials said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed off on the decision to place the radical group on the international terror list on Friday. The sanctions took effect with her signature.

The U.S. designation of Fatah al-Islam will bring to 43 the number of groups on the blacklist, which already includes many of the world’s most notorious terrorist organizations.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “There was no immediate comment from Lebanese officials. Fatah Islam militants, who spoke to journalists by mobile phone from inside the Nahr el-Bared camp in the early days of the fighting, can no longer be reached.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The whereabouts Fatah Islam leader, Shaker Youssef Absi, are unknown.”
