Or more likely the sound of rivets popping one by one. As soon as a critical rivet failed and dumped it's load onto surrounding rivets the whole structure would start to unzip.
I think terrorism is unlikely as a terrorist would run the risk of anyone on the construction crew spotting something amiss, and would do his dirty work in a less observable location.
Years ago it was reported that the Chinese were mislabeling lower quality steel as higher grades so it would sell better. They didn’t care what might be effected by this. I wouldn’t doubt when the investigation is complete that they used substandard rivets or other steel in that work on the girders last week.
I live near Pittsburgh. It has more bridges across the three rivers there than anywhere else in the world. They’ve never collapsed and many are probably a lot older. They are in a cold, snowy area with a lot of freeze-thaw cycles in the winter. This just looks funny to me.
And, thankfully, we can rest secure in the confidence that NO islamist scumbag would ever seek employment in that sort of trade. In fact, we can relax in the knowledge that the whole concept of "sleeper agents" is mere paranoid fiction.
