But, for what it is worth, the biggest Yankees fan I ever met was raised in a rural area a long, long way from New York City. I remember watching a number of games with him back in the glory days of Thurman Munson.
I've known a few folks like that. I knew a huge Red Sox fan named Mike who lived all his life in Philadelphia. The reason he liked the Sox was that his dad was a Ted Williams fan, and it just passed down through the family.
The difference between Mike and Hillary is Mike had a believable story about how he became a Red Sox fan.
I am reminded that when Kerry was back in Boston for the DemoConvention in 2004, he attended a Red Sox game. In the process of explaining that he was a die-hard Sox fan and had been his entire life, he was asked who his favorite player was.
His answer, “Manny Ortez”.
Not Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz.
“Manny Ortez.”
I knew at that moment that he was dead to all true Sox fans.
