Cheney: 'I was wrong about insurgency'

WASHINGTON, July 31 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney Tuesday admitted he was wrong when he declared the Iraq insurgency virtually over in 2005.

In an interview with CNN's Larry King, Cheney said he thought at the time the capture of Saddam Hussein, elections and other milestones would be enough to undermine the insurgency.

"That clearly didn't happen," Cheney admitted. "I think the insurgency turned out to be more robust."

Cheney predicted, however, Iraq will be in a much better position by the time he and U.S. President George Bush leave office Jan. 20, 2009.

The vice president said he is opposed to closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay, saying, "you need to have someplace to hold those individuals who have been captured during the global war on terror."

Cheney also told CNN he doesn't care about whether he's well-liked and doesn't bear any grudges against Brent Scowcroft, who has said, "This is not the Dick Cheney I knew."

"If I were in the business to be popular, I suppose I'd be worried about my poll ratings and so forth. I'm not," said Cheney, adding he has no plans ever to run for office or seek another government post again. "I came here to do a job. I'm not running for any office, myself."

Cheney repeated in the CNN interview his assertion that the vice president is part of both the executive and legislative branches of government -- noting his paycheck comes from the Senate.

Cheney would have made a great president. Truman redux.

Agreed. Sometimes I think the Almighty puts a handicap on our side: Cheney's heart problems, Justice Roberts' seizure, Reagan's Alzheimers, etc. How the hell can Teddy Kennedy stay in such good health considering his driving and eating/drinking habits?

We don’t ask a resignation just for being wrong about a little war, ... but we ask it for a blow job!

What a load of donkey dung!!!! Now just exactly who was it providing the Veep the intel to make said assessment about that insurgency??? Further if anyone believes the insurgency did not have global and I am NOT specifically referring to Arab nations, a call to arms then they have no credibility in pointing fingers at the Veep.

I have heard the majority of the liberal camp day in and day out, even running for the highly coveted position of president 'moooolahing' a call to arms. The Veep just has more class than the majority and willing to say at that point in time it was not what he thought it to literally to be. Guess he should have said the Flame gang Wilsoned him. I have yet to hear the likes of JFKerry and his big brother ever admit anything they believe to be ever from the dark side.

His mother lived to over 100 so I am sure he enjoys some of those genes. He probably won’t live that long but he could into his 90’s considering his father was younger.

Judging from his earlier posts, Darkness78 has not been a troll. However, this latest post may suggest DU influence in the use of words. Darkness78 needs greater care with the DUmming down influences out there in the vast wasteland.

Uh, no. His paycheck comes from the citizens.

Too many politicians forget that.
