It escalates with inflation somehow and is set at a round number by the FEC.
It’s the gubmint. There are rooms filled with people of marginal mental acuity and stability who get paid vast sums of money to come up with inane and cumbersome figures to be inflicted upon the citizenry. Just look at any tax form.

OK actually I don’t remember if that limit is tied to CFR2, but since letting fact get in the way of a good rant seems so out of fashion with the Antifredites, I figure what the hell...
One of the few good things about McCain-Feingold (and, not coincidentally, the part that Thompson was responsible for adding) was the increase in the "hard money" cap -- it was increased to $2000 per cycle, and indexed for inflation, which is why it is now $2300.
