Fred Thompson is laying on the southern-fried charm. Its a tire-melting afternoon in June,
and the son of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, turned two-term United States senator, Law & Order star,
and now almost Republican presidential candidate has just arrived at the Clarion Townhouse hotel in Columbia,
South Carolina, for a state-party fund-raiser.
A crush of reporters has swarmed him, one of whom has just asked if today will be the day Thompson makes things official.
Thompson delivers his honey-smooth reply as if on cue. Im just testing the waters, but the water is pretty warm,
he says as he plows toward the ballroom...
In May 1994, Thompson trailed badly and talked of quitting. Frustrated, he called Knoxville political consultant Tom Ingram...
Although some of his campaign staff protested the move as cheesy, they leased Thompson a red Chevy pickup and he hit the road.
Cooper attempted to paint Thompson as phony, calling him a Gucci-wearing, Lincoln-driving, Perrier-drinking,
Grey Pouponspreading millionaire Washington special-interest lobbyist.
But voters loved the truck. They didnt seem to mind that the candidate often switched from a sedan to the truck just miles from his appearances.
We couldnt believe anyone was buying it, says Kopp. We underestimated him.
What we didnt get is that Fred is the country version of a street kid.
Hes been talking his way out of situations since he was in high school. Hes a charmer. People fall for it....
But Thompsons strongest card, his backers say, is his Hollywood-fueled image of strength.
People think that with presidential candidates, you need a lot of information about them, says Tony Fabrizio,
a GOP pollster. Thats wrong. Its all about the concept. He has the Schwarzenegger Factor"

The Birchers have really been slipping of late.
been here all the time actually, probably haven’t posted since then though, please point out anything factually wrong with the article that you can find, until then don’t attack the messenger because you don’t like the message. For the record, I haven’t decided on a candidate yet so I have no interest in building up or tearing down any of them at this point.
A lot of smart people have looked at the history books and said, Well, its been a pretty good run. Lots of civilizations have lasted a little longer, but they all declined and got fat and happy and sassy and weak. And they all just faded into the sunset. Thompson was working the room without a microphone and spoke quietly and even slower than usual. That is not going to happen on our watch.
Sui generis?
When Thompson talks about issues, his speeches tend to lose focus and drift.Ok. That's it for me. I might finish this later but with this sentence I think the writer is really losing focus and I feel like drifting away.
It’s all irrelevant, because one need not subscribe to those beliefs to be a CFR member. They do publish papers pushing globalism. They also publish papers rebutting the pro-globalist papers. Who do you think writes the rebuttals, a roomful of monkeys banging away on Selectrics?
He keeps missing the “Take Over the World” All you can eat rib night...
Both Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson were at Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concert last Thursday in San Diego. I was in the crowd and was able to shake their hands and speak with both of them. Judging by that crowd, Duncan Hunter is well known for his work on the border but Fred Thompson is a rock star. People could not get enough of him! He’s big, tall, warm, gracious, as is Congressman Hunter (who was enthusiastically lauded because his son is in Afghanistan). Thompson had a lot of supporters handing stuff out, etc. There was a motorhome out from with “Fred Thompson ‘08” and “Put Law and Order in the White House” all over it. We teased him that the thing was a dead giveaway as to his decision. He said, “Well, it would be but that’s not mine. That’s a family from..(I forget where). I just met them today.” Sure enough, a family with four kids who painted their motorhome, and are taking their summer to travel around and support Thompson! He and Jon Voight (wonderful man!) hung out with the crowd longer than anyone, except Sean. After the music started he came out and sat with the crowd in the front row, just in front of us. So many people left their seats and went up to shake his hand that after a few minutes Sean’s assistant came and got him and took him backstage. This was a hard core conservative crowd, filled with military and military families, and they were very excited about FT. I really hope he’s our guy. He’s awesome.
Interesting....
I said “hit piece.” Didn’t mention anything about “factual errors,” now, did I? Numerous FReepers, myself included, have pointed out the slant of the piece. I pointed out examples of that slant in post #10.
I enjoyed reading your post. I envy you the firsthand experience with that crowd.
As to the rest, there have been more than a few pro Israel articles published at the CFR. Indeed, if the "Anti-Israel" CFR controls everything, why are we even still supporting Israel at all with arms and intelligence...
Excellent story. Sounds like you had a great time at the concert.
Hey, it takes time to come down from the compound and get online...
It all started with a typo in ‘68...
Fred is too lazy to be an active member of the CFR.LOL!
With that one sentence you've put an entire generation of Fred-bashers in a quandry.
Do they agree with it and minimize the CFR charge?
Do they dispute it and minimize the laziness charge?
Whadya do? Whadya do?
Maybe they could try: "He's really really lazy except when he's working for CFR, then he works really really hard."
Might work!
The more stuff like this I read, the more I realize just how much nothin’ they got.
Rn, Fred, Run!
