Yes, liberals cannot allow charter schools experiment to succeed, because it takes choice of schools and the control associated with it - like busing and school food and “desegregation” and salaries and curriculum and teachers’ knowledge base and dependence on government and the union - away from them and actually gives “power to the people”. Education can become a private industry with the free market benefits of competition and lower cost, that’s why it’s so dangerous to them. It can also show the way to real solutions in financing health care, and that they cannot afford to happen, either.

This can just make you cry :
Detroit Public Schools - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Public_Schools

“In the early 1970s, the federal courts ordered busing to desegregate the system, which helped the level the playing field for black students. As of 2004, Detroit schools were 91% African-American.”

“In 1999, the Michigan Legislature removed the locally elected board of education amid allegations of mismanagement and replaced it with a reform board appointed by the mayor and governor.”

“The DPS student population was 159,768 in fall 2001 and has fallen to 116,815 in fall 2006 [8]. Due to declining enrollment, some believe that DPS are headed towards a fiscal collapse [9] leading to another state takeover. The projected loss in 2006 of about 25,000 students (12,350 actual) would have likely require immediate and severe action, including closing schools and reducing staff. To encourage students to attend on count day, Wednesday, September 26, the attendance date for establishing state funding, Detroit Public Schools used a media campaign and giveaways including flat panel TVs, lunches with celebrities, and free grades. [11] Total spending was $100,000 for attendance promotions on that day, including $40,000 in donated funds and $60,000 in school funds.”

The CITY, of course, should be evacuated and turned into a national park.

I disagree. I think we need to make the city look like Escape from New York. Builds wall all around, install wire, whatever. The, place all the illegals and the criminals to fen for themselves. “Life” sentence.

“I don’t know what Detroits graduation rate is, but I GUARANTEE YOU THIS! It isn’t remotely near the 67% which was the high number offered in the article.. you have to fudge the numbers big time to remotely come close to a near 70% graduation rate.”

In Detroit its less than 25% ( about 23% last I heard ) the rest of the state is about 85%.

Well when you know at 10 years old your going to spend your life getting a check for the gubment your entire live, not any reason to put any effort into improving yourself or educating yourself.

Liberalism has robbed entire generations of human beings of drive and hope, and Detroit is just one of many examples of it.

It is also spreading to the other cities in the state as the welfare funds in Detroit dry up.

Unless Michigan becomes a RTW state soon there will be nothing left but RATS on welfare and public employees taxing each other to death.
