I just sent my letter to BOR:
“Mr. O’Reilly,
I just wanted to let you know that this “FReeper” was highly insulted to hear your guest Lanny Davis
on your Monday, July 30th episode insult the Free Republic.com conservative online group as a ‘right wing hate site’—
(although he called it ‘freedomrepublican.com’ or somesuch)—I was even more disappointed that you let that
insult slide by responding, not verbatim, along the lines of “Yeah, but Republican candidates steer clear of those
kinds of websites” and that you would go after any candidate that did.
I have been a member of Free Republic for several years now, and I have to say that it is NOWHERE near the
evil likes of Daily Kos or Democratic Underground or a number of the extreme leftist online groups out there in
cyberspace. The majority of FReepers are decent, conservative people who do not use the foul-mouthed type of
language or disgusting pictures that are so prevalent on the correctly labeled ‘online extremist leftist hate groups’ like
DK and DU. Of course, there are always extreme extremists (and I often wonder if they are ‘plants’ from DK and DU)
who make boneheaded comments on FR— it is an instrument of free speech after all. The group moderators remove such
types pretty quickly, in my experience, though, unlike the so-called mods at DK and DU, who often contribute to the
trash being posted!
Anyway, I wish you had pointed out to Mr. Davis that the only comparison between FR and DK/DU is that they both
take place in cyberspace and cannot be compared otherwise. Free Republic is NOT a right wing hate group, not by a
long shot. I know a lot of people on FR don’t like your radio show or tv show—I’ve always enjoyed them for the most
part, even when I’ve disagreed with your viewpoints. I’ve even written to you and offered prayers and support for you
in the past when it seemed you were being railroaded with those sexual misconduct charges awhile back. I’m a conservative
Republican (for now, not very happy with the party lately)—just an anonymous soccer mom who loves her country with
an un-apologetic fervor who wants the best our society can offer, not the worst it can withstand to the detriment of our
citizens...I’m not a ‘right wing hater’ by any means. I’m sorry you feel that FreeRepublic.com is such a thing. :-(
It isn’t.
It’s been recommended that people stop watching your show and that you correct this maligning viewpoint—it’s not my
place to keep anyone from their opinions and free speech—not even the DKers or DUers—or *YOU*. Doesn’t mean I
have to expose myself to that sort of stuff though. More’s the pity. :-(
