Latinos Unite to Turn Fear Into Activism Pr. William Policy on Illegal Immigrants Prompts Call for Boycott, Other Actions

By Pamela Constable Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, July 28, 2007; A01

Latinos in Prince William County, angered and panicked by a county resolution to crack down on illegal immigrants, are swiftly banding together against what they see as an assault on their community. They vowed this week to block the resolution through a boycott, a petition drive and possibly a labor strike or lawsuit.

At packed public meetings in three towns this week, organizers signed up volunteers, circulated petitions, set up a hotline for reports of discrimination and announced a campaign of phone calls and e-mails to county officials. They also said they would organize caravans to visit Loudoun County and other communities where Latinos feel targeted.

On Thursday night in Manassas, more than 1,000 Latino residents voted with raised fists and cheers to stage a one-week boycott of all non-immigrant businesses in Prince William at the end of next month. The crowd first met in a church, then grew so large it had to move to a park outside. Latinos in Woodbridge and Dumfries also voted this week to stage the boycott and other actions.

The surge of activism, which also includes voter registration and citizenship drives in other communities, follows a long period of drift and uncertainty for area Latino advocates, especially since the collapse of a major immigration reform bill in the Senate last month. Opponents of illegal immigrants, who had swamped Capitol Hill with impassioned e-mails and phone calls against the bill, felt emboldened by its defeat and have pressed ahead with local measures.

The arrogance of these people blows me away... you break in and then claim that it belongs to you... I see civil war on the horizon...how else can you deal with such narcissists?

They only have this nerve and demand so much because we allow it . Until we start meeting them in the streets in larger numbers it will only get worse . Our kids will inherit a third world because we sat back and gave it away . If these radicals don’t murder them first . They ae now passing laws that will get me put into prison for saying this . Wake up and take back your country . Stop depending on your communist one worlder representatives to do it for you. They have indoctrinated our young, made our God illegal , infiltrated our nation with the enemy and to add insult to horrible injury, they have sent us the bill for our own demise. We need to peacefully protest and vote them all out of office .

Remember what happened to New Orleans ,our military went into Americans homes and took their weapons of defense .We need to keep our military informed as well and let them know we are not the enemy. My son is in the military [ served in Iraq ‘ not active now ‘ ] so don’t take this wrong.

That really does stick in the craw, don't it?

Aztlan gets bigger by the year.

It mentions voter registration? For who the illegals? Oh thats right the dems will make sure they get a chance to vote. Did you ever think in a million years that illegal aliens would have the balls to protest in a country they do not belong in? Blame this on our sick politicians who allow this and encourage this and protect them more than they protect the very people who pay thier salaries.

Tell him to waltz into an ER with no ID on person, and claim that his name is Jose Hernandez. They’ll treat him, fix him up and write it off.

Uh, we have a large LEGAL hispanic population in PWC.

A lot of people fighting the “illegal immigrant” battle are actually fighting the hispanic population and culture, but trying to sound politically correct by saying it’s all about “illegals”.

There are people who belong to our local Help Save Manassas, who whenever they post to the leader’s blog, write about how they hate having to press 1 for english, or that businesses provide spanish language help for hispanics. They get upset about a parents who have lots of kids, extended families living together, people who fix their own cars, people who serve their own community through vending.

There’s been a row of complaints about people with food gardens in their front yards, especially corn. The president of Help Save Manassas complained that having to teach kids through the ESOL program might take money away from his kid’s education.

The problem? All of those complaints are non-specific. Sure, illegals have all of those problems. But citizen children of legal immigrant parents might be raised speaking spanish, and need ESL. Legal immigrants, and even citizens, of hispanic origin are more comfortable speaking spanish than english. A lot of legal hispanics are catholic, and they have large families.

Hispanics are culturally family oriented and so a lot of legal hispanics have extended family living together. It’s of course not just a hispanic thing, my sister and her kids lived with my parents.

The president of Help Save Manassas, in an attempt to explain to a reporter for the Washington Post what he saw as the problem, walked her into his front yard and pointed out the “loud salsa music” being played by a neighbor.

As if only ILLEGAL immigrants like loud salsa music.

The legal hispanic community is feeling attacked, even if they are not really being attacked.

The illegal-immigrant supporters are using this unfortunate inability of the HSM folks to separate their culture war with the real problem of illegals, and are drumming up support from legal immigrant hispanics who might otherwise be upset about people doing illegally what they did legally.

Wouldn’t it be great if these Latinos would get this excited about their own countries of origin and return and create some actual change there.

They’ve been voting by the thousands in Cali for years, where no checking of any kind is done.

They are fools. I actually hope they go forward with it.

It will be a PR disaster.

They are so stupid, because their organizers are stupid, and they are stupid. Complete loco en las cabezas. Total, uneducated, simpletone retards.

What they end up doing is radicalizing the middle of Americans, you know, the fence sitters who have not made up their minds about illegal aliens yet, because, well, their own minds are "out to the mall" or they don't want to be politically incorrect.

They way the illegals push this stuff, they will piss off the people who are neutral on this issue, and even more Americans are going to be opposed to their cause.

They are stirring up a bee's nest. Stupid for them, good for us.

Good luck surviving in the US! Why don't you just go back to MEXICO where there are plenty of businesses you would prefer?!!!

Maybe we should boycott ALL IMMIGRANT business! That can work both ways, jerks!

And they wonder why they aren't welcomed with opened arms.

Sounds like a great bumper sticker:

"NO THANKS, ILLEGALS.

I MOW MY OWN DAMN LAWN

LIKE A REAL AMERICAN MAN!"

This might cause a chuckle from many American men and make them think, and is liable to be fancied a bit by the womenfolk, too! :-)

Yes, it is coming to some level of tensions we have not seen before in America with this subset of people in our midst (illegally), probably graduating to some kind of violence inflicted by illegals on pro-legal demonstrators, then pockets of domestic strife and civil war. I give it about 10 years. You can see if from abroad coming, demographically, as well as the illegals escalating their actions from peaceful marches, to raised fists, to violence—escalated a step higher when with each public act they fail to get what they want. It is going to be ugly and it is going to be violent.
