Do you remember Hugo Chavez at the United Nations last year? Do you remember what he said? "The devil came here yesterday," Chavez exuded, his voice dripping mock wonder, making the sign of the cross at the podium where Bush had spoken the day before. "Right here, and it smells of sulfur still today."
The antics of the Venezuelan strongman were inspired by his being in the well of the General Assembly. The spotlight was on him, and he was going to make the most of it.
Now imagine how Chavez would behave were he to stroll out into the Rose Garden arm-in-arm with President Obama. What do you think he'd say to the reporters assembled there?
That's what I thought of as Obama and Hillary Clinton locked horns over whether his statement that he would meet with rogue leaders without any preconditions is "naive," as Clinton immediately claimed, or whether it demonstrates a willingness to re-engage the world, as Obama insists.
I have to side with Hillary on this one. In the grown-up world, the underlings squabble over the details long before the famous faces deploy themselves to summits and White House meetings. Otherwise, the risk of America being humiliated by show-boating madmen playing to the home crowd is too great.
Granted, Obama's view is tempting -- if only we'd treat these tin pot despots with the respect they crave, why then maybe they'd be our friends. My gut tells me that kind of sincerity only works in the movies.
It's bad enough we have the United Nations as a gilded frame for whichever lunatic dictator can make his way to the podium. We don't want to make the White House into "American Idol" for our enemies. Not only is Obama's approach a blunder, but it's worrisome to see how vigorously he is defending it. We've already got a guy whose fingers can't be pried off his mistakes. We don't need another.

I am still wondering why Chavez was allowed to leave the US without a bullet in his head.

This is EXACTLY what Neville Chamberlain thought about Hitler.
Because we're better than he and his kind. Give his policies a little more time and his own subjects (I use the word advisedly) will be ready to supply the bullet.
The outrageous words used by the half-a-man, Chavez, should have created a backlash from the American people and had the tinpot removed, permanently from the United States. The silence over this was deafening and leads me to believe that the Marxists’ running for POTUS, Hillary and Hussein, have lied and twisted words and many Americans are buying it. So many attacks from the left in our universities, halls of Congress, major media outlets and other America-hating groups have damaged our Country almost beyond repair. Unless we stand up to these one-world government types then we lose everything. Our borders have remained open and the legislation that is being presented and often passed in our Congress has been secretly hidden from the public, many underhanded moves are taking place daily by the left and we seem to find out only after enormous damage has been done to our freedoms. Pray for our Country!
History provides ample evidence that despots desire “talking” becuase it BUYS THEM TIME while the march towards their goals.
Or, I can see President Hillary Clinton, clad in a complete body robe where, thankfully, only her eyes can be seen. The same two would be on each of her pudgy arms. From the back of her robe, as she walks, it would appear that two boys are fighting under her robes.
