White House enforces strict dress code for tourists
CBS News ^ | 7/26/07

WASHINGTON New signs are posted around the White House indicating a new strict enforcement of the dress code, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The code applies to all visitors and staff members, including tourists.

Some tourists are finding the strict clothing restrictions at the White House un-American.

The forbidden items include jeans, sneakers, mini-skirts, t-shirts, tank tops and absolutely no flip flops.

The motivation for the clothing crack-down comes from the Bush Administration who think some of those who work there and those who visit just don't dress appropriately.

I don’t know which is more appalling, the idea that people are so lacking in manners, propriety, and common decency that the White House must now post rules, or the evidence here that somehow requiring respectful dress is imperialistic and a violation of some God-given right.

The fun thing about grown up dressing, is that you can dress how ever you want. Now if they want to pass rules like this for staff, great. A simple no belly, boobs or butt showing ought to be enough rules for the public.

Don't you think it's time to start dressing like a grown-up?

Dressing like a cubicle slave instead of a person is maturity?

Or what?

Or they won't let you in?

I wonder what an online poll would say if we were asked to decide if you are out of line, or just infantile?

Mini-skirts and tank tops are an adaptation to global warming...

Agree 100% with the new policy. It’s not the Clinton WH anymore. This is the highest office in the **WORLD**, not your favorite theme park, and you better show some respect for it.

I can respect White House in Wranglers and Reboks just as well as I can wearing anything else...

They must want to be able to blend in with the tourists so we can't point them out in a line up...

Or they won't let you in?

Likely not.

My objection, however, is to the phrase you better show some respect for it.

I check my list of people who can tell me what to do every day.

No harmlesslovablefuzzball on the list.

Maybe fuzzy should be a soccer coach or something and have a group of kids to boss around.

You, obviously don’t understand when your government is trouncing on your rights. The WH is my house (and yours), and I should be able to wear whatever I like.

Social decorum, I understand; if someone throws a party at their house, I dress as asked or I don’t go. My tux is pressed and ready to wear for the next social function, should I decide to be a comformist. At church today, I noticed how casually everyone was dressed, and I thought how comfortable Jesus would have felt amongst us were he born in these times.

I hear what you’re saying mate, but I’ve had it out with the Nanny staters and the No Freedom conservatives before. They don’t bother me, they are merely irritants like your average sand flee.

I would advocate coat and tie, at least a jacket.

I would advocate you stay where you're at...And I'll stay here with what little liberty we have left...

No jeans and sneakers? What do they think American tourists wear?

And if they’re trying to exclude tourists, why?

“Andrew Jackson is spinning in his grave.”

Especially since Congressman Crockett used to visit the whitehouse in buckskins carrying hunting knife on his belt. Imagine the outrage these maggots would show today.

This is how it happens. First they tell us how to dress in the WH, then they tell us how to dress elsewhere. Slippery slope folks. Soon, they will tell us what to think, and we’ll all be wondering how it happened that we are all slaves to the new and improved King George. Can you say “stupid, unquestioning public”? People who back the WH’s decision on this are even stupider than I thought; one step closer to tyrrany. Wake the hell up, people.

I definitely agree with you.

However, I understand the DESIRE to do this. Every City Hall and business is probably sick of looking at people who look like they are going to Wal-Mart, the beach, the races or a Playboy layout appointment.

This rule points out what so many fail to acknowledge. WE ALL ARE NOT EQUAL thus someone has to set the standard by telling those with no sense what is appropriate attire and when.

I just don't agree it should be the White House but, I remember how disgusted I was watching on T.V. the many people stream past (I think it was Reagan but it might have been Ford) who lay in state in our Capitol Rotunda. It was embarassing to me, the way some were dressed, as it was broadcast the world over. We are viewing the demise of RESPECT--plain and simple and it is glaring the differences in CLASS and class act.

I was rather taken aback by the ferocity. I could have understood if the subject had been about something controversial, but the whitehouse dress code.
