White House enforces strict dress code for tourists
CBS News ^ | 7/26/07

Posted on 07/29/2007 10:50:10 AM PDT by Santa Fe_Conservative

WASHINGTON New signs are posted around the White House indicating a new strict enforcement of the dress code, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The code applies to all visitors and staff members, including tourists.

Some tourists are finding the strict clothing restrictions at the White House un-American.

The forbidden items include jeans, sneakers, mini-skirts, t-shirts, tank tops and absolutely no flip flops.

The motivation for the clothing crack-down comes from the Bush Administration who think some of those who work there and those who visit just don't dress appropriately.

>>if people can’t dress appropriately when visiting this national treasure<< Oh, please. When I'm in another city on vacation, particularly in warm weather, I'm in my standard uniform: t-shirt, shorts, and a cap since, well, I'm hair challenged (somewhat due to my own choice). This includes D.C. and would include a trip to the White House. There's nothing inappropriate about wearing shorts and t-shirts in the WH while on vacation. If you work there, obviously, that's a much different issue. This is absurd.

‘pears ol Andy Jackson’s friends have a lot of descendants.

Folks, this is not an overreaching request. All they are asking is a modicum of respectful dress. Get bent out of shape about something serious.

And people who dress well behave accordingly. People who dress like slobs act like slobs. It takes no effort at all to appear neat.

Is it a son-of-a-bitching sin to “dress like a slob?”

I would argue, that God doesn´t care about the dress His people wore or wears. Our Saviour didn´t own a black dress and a tie, and he judges on the hearts and minds of us, not on our clothing.

Why does that man in the first row in the middle wear a red tie? How comes he dares to make himself special? Does he think he´s different or even better than the others? Who does he think he is? The President or what?

When we go to the Vatican soon I will have to wear a long skirt and cover my shoulders. I will just go back to the hotel and change clothes for the rest of the days events.

The Vatican is not the White House. The White House is not owned by President Bush. The Vatican is owned by the Catholic Church...two big differences. I am glad that I received my personal tour of the white house already. I did dress appropriately, but not because I had to but that I wanted too. President Bush is not King regardless of what he thinks.

No jeans, but I'm sure serapes and guayaberas are A-OK.

Appears to me that it's a bit late in Bush's presidency to be changing the rules like this. It would have been better (IMO, of course), to have done this six years ago.

There is one area where the Bush Administration has been a complete failure: the use of the "bully pulpit". I guess that statement could be applied to 41 as well.

Hey, wait a minute, my dress up for church is a pair of clean jeans and boots most Sundays.

This will exclude about 30 percent of the presidents base.

Oh, thats right Michael Jerktoff,Johnny McCaniac, Melvin Martinez and Limply Gramnesty say were nothing but a bunch of racists, arrogant, obnoxious trailer trash.

So they probably do not want us in D.C., anyway.

Speaking of RESPECT......

Wasn’t it just a couple of weeks ago that the White House and many elected officials showed little or no respect for the wishes of we the people.

Have we forgotten Shamnesty so soon.

These same elected and appointed officials may try running Shamnesty through congress again if Senator Sphincter gets his wishes.

Excellent. I’d like to see this dresscode adopted for church, too.

Well in any case the White House is a rather placid scene these days compared to the 19th century, when people could come and go as they pleased for much of the century, often just strolling in wearing any street attire and asking to meet the president. [of course they did not have flip-flops and jeans around too much in those days]

On the more extreme end of things, here is an eyewitness account of the 1829 Inauguration Day for Andrew Jackson:

“But what a scene did we witness! The Majesty of the People had disappeared, and a rabble, a mob, of boys, negros [sic], women, children, scrambling fighting, romping. What a pity what a pity! No arrangements had been made no police officers placed on duty and the whole house had been inundated by the rabble mob. We came too late. The President, after having been literally nearly pressed to death and almost suffocated and torn to pieces by the people in their eagerness to shake hands with Old Hickory, had retreated through the back way or south front and had escaped to his lodgings at Gadsby’s. Cut glass and china to the amount of several thousand dollars had been broken in the struggle to get the refreshments, punch and other articles had been carried out in tubs and buckets, but had it been in hogsheads it would have been insufficient, ice-creams, and cake and lemonade, for 20,000 people, for it is said that number were there, tho’ I think the estimate exaggerated. Ladies fainted, men were seen with bloody noses and such a scene of confusion took place as is impossible to describe,—those who got in could not get out by the door again, but had to scramble out of windows. At one time, the President who had retreated and retreated until he was pressed against the wall, could only be secured by a number of gentlemen forming round him and making a kind of barrier of their own bodies, and the pressure was so great that Col Bomford who was one said that at one time he was afraid they should have been pushed down, or on the President. It was then the windows were thrown open, and the torrent found an outlet, which otherwise might have proved fatal.”
