White House enforces strict dress code for tourists
CBS News ^ | 7/26/07

WASHINGTON New signs are posted around the White House indicating a new strict enforcement of the dress code, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The code applies to all visitors and staff members, including tourists.

Some tourists are finding the strict clothing restrictions at the White House un-American.

The forbidden items include jeans, sneakers, mini-skirts, t-shirts, tank tops and absolutely no flip flops.

The motivation for the clothing crack-down comes from the Bush Administration who think some of those who work there and those who visit just don't dress appropriately.

My guess is Laura put the policy in place to prevent this from every happening again:

These people sound like CHILDREN here.

Not just children. I am talking women well into maturity.

It is terribly distracting having to read inside a box; it must be doubly so living inside one.

Oh, boy, it’s a conspiracy./s

I’d venture to say that the “stupid unquestioning public” are in the flip flops and tank tops...

I agree with the dress code. As a society, we’ve lost much of our dignity and it’s disgusting to watch.

Oops. You’re inappropriate. T-shirts aren’t allowed.

I wore a dress. And sandals. I guess I should have found some nasty waitress shoes and knee socks.

I’m speaking of a slightly dressier (material) t-shirt/top. :-)

I find that a lightweight pair of pants with stretch with a simple strect t-shirt is far more comfortable than jeans.

Good for you. I wear jeans.

It’s not that difficult to find something appropriate that’s comfortable.

I find it difficult to accept that you think that I cannot wear in the White House what I can wear as an executive at the engineering firm where I work.

Oh, oh...sandals? :-) Maybe a little “dressier” sandals would do then. Who knows?

I'm generally in agreement with your philosophical principles on excess goverment. It feels like a silly application here though. In your mind, is walking through the whitehouse nude ok? A bathing suit? Slippery slopes can go either direction from the apex!

I will grant the White House the right to establish a dress code, for the White House. Does that then set a precedent for dress codes elsewhere, like government schools? Government highways? That would start us down a slope I guess. I don't know.

The slippery slope is a valid concern, even if invalid as a premise to a logical conclusion. Slippery slopes, applied too liberally, can look silly. Hence, my original thought that your comment was a parody.

There seem to be a sad lacking of people with class anymore.

Class has nothing to do with it.

Your not meeting anyone when your
walking thought the tourist section
of the White house.

It's ok for the Dalai Lama to sport
flip-flops but not tourist.

I live in DC and visited the
White House. After waiting in the
heat for an hour, your in and out in
5 minutes.

Bush should set dress codes rules when
he moved in, not when he's about to move
out of the White House.

This is silly subject.

When my wife and I went there as part of our honeymoon trip to D.C., I couldn't even bring myself to go to the viewing stands as for some reason I just didn't feel worthy enough to watch it up close. Thank goodness for the zoom lens.
