What to Expect at Sunday LDS Meetings
The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ^ | JULY 2007

Posted on 07/29/2007 3:23:40 AM PDT by restornu

CLICK

Our primary family worship service is called sacrament meeting. This meeting is held in our meetinghouses on Sunday and lasts approximately 70 minutes. Visitors are welcome to attend. It is common for families to attend, and we are accustomed to having children as part of the congregation.

A typical meeting would consist of the following:

Hymns: Religious songs sung by the congregation (hymn books are provided).

Prayers: Offered by local Church members.

Partaking of the Sacrament (Communion): The sacrament is passed to members of the congregation.

Speakers: Typically a meeting will have two or three assigned speakers.

We do not pass a plate to request donations as part of our worship services.

Additional Meetings

Visitors are also welcome to attend other Sunday meetings that precede or follow sacrament meeting: Sunday School classes are offered for each age-group, beginning with twelve year olds. Primary meetings consist of a group service and age-oriented classes for children three through eleven years of age. A nursery is available for young children, ages eighteen months to three years. Young Women meetings provide classes for those twelve through seventeen years of age. Relief Society meeting is for women, ages eighteen years and older. Priesthood meetings provide age-oriented classes for males twelve years and older. Sacrament meetings and other meetings may be conducted in differing sequences, depending on the preference of local leaders. This site displays the beginning time of the three-hour block of meetings and the starting time of sacrament meeting.

Appropriate Dress

Those who attend will most likely be wearing their "Sunday best," which may include suits, sport coats, and ties for the men and dresses or skirts for the women. Children also typically dress up for Sunday.

Helpful Information

Our local congregations are called wards (or branches). The spiritual leader of each ward is called the bishop (or the branch president for branches). He is a member of the congregation who has been asked to serve as a volunteer in this position. Because we have a lay ministry rather than paid clergy, all Church service is voluntary.

Sir, you need to open your eyes a little wider and see that a man being an evangelist does not necessarily mean that he identifies with the this generation’s over-generalized, apostatized “evangelical” movement. “Evangelist” is biblical term. It means that my ministry directly involves preaching the Gospel of the Grace of God (Acts 20:24) to the unconverted. “Evangelical” is not a biblical term.

“Evangelical” is a term that goes all the way back to the mid 19th century. Most American church members today would consider the most worldly of those dear saints extreme nut cases. Their preachers preached hard against sin and the world and the devil. They preached Hell H O T and Heaven sweet.

Prior to WWII virtually ALL “evangelical” preachers preached from exactly the same Bible. Virtually all of their people were reading and memorizing and loving the exact same Bible. All Bible colleges and seminaries were teaching the same Bible.

Most people who accept the description “evangelical” today, however, would have been considered ultra-liberal, apostate and worldly by those who were termed “evangelical” prior to WWII.

So, WHAT is an “evangelical,” and how does it apply to me? I am a Bible-believing Christian evangelist

Well, aren’t you just full of yourself. Whenever I see some person bring up the 8th article of faith, I know they are truly a Roman Pagan at heart because that is the guy that paid the Bishops of Rome to put it together. I also notice that your “doctrine” of “Christianity” does not include source citations that we use for our beliefs. Of course, you also don’t want to admit that your “trinity” or “triune” is a greek invention that has nothing to do with Jesus. Keep on reading, though, you might get it right sooner or later. I am still reading and learning.

And of course you also think that Paul wrote the book of Revelations in his spare time? After he was dead of course.

I don’t normally get involved in religious threads, but I gotta say...I’m a Baptist. A Southern Baptist, no less.

I’ve seen S. Baptists bashed pretty hard on some threads. I don’t care. Doesn’t bother me in the least. I know Whom I have believed. My house is build on Rock.

I guess if my house was built on sand, I’d get pretty upset when the waves bashed.

Bumping your post.

This truthful information should be dispensed more frequently.

You are being intellectually dishonest. The Book of Mormon adds to, and contradicts, the Bible. It is INDEED another Gospel.

"And of course you also think that Paul wrote the book of Revelations in his spare time? After he was dead of course."

What are you talking about?

Paul told Timothy "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

1. If the man of God can be made perfect and furnished to every good work from the scriptures revealed 1,800 years before Joseph Smith, why did Joseph Smith need anything else? Answer - He didn't. He tried to add to what God has revealed. For that, he will be accursed.

Any time that I am flying through these posts, if it is not clear that I am responding to a female, I will continue to use, “Sir.” That’s the way it will be. No offense intended. If I see an indication that I am responding to a female, I will use, “Madam.”

This is only my observation, and I am only speaking about those that use the name, “Christian” in describing themselves.

If a particular religious organization presents itself (and being a member) as the only way to salvation, or the only way to an acceptable eternity, it will tend to be bashed more than the others. If people tend to point to Christ and make Him, Personally, the Door, rather than their organization, they will tend to be bashed less.

This, of course, is not a hard and fast rule. I have seen some in the top list ridiculed, as well. Perhaps most Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians and Calvinists have more tendency to shrug it off.

If an individual truly believes that Jesus Christ, Himself, is the Door to Heaven, and not any particular named organized religious entity on this earth, it’s pretty hard to make him/her feel oppressed, if you demean an organization he/she happens to be a member of (for whatever reason). He/She feels no dependency on the organization for eternal safety. If it fails (they all do), Christ never fails. People fail, pastors fail, leadership fails, organizations fail. Christ never fails.

“We are electing a President not a Priest in Chief..”

But do not think that the underlying faith of a man can or won’t deriously affect his decision-making.

Friend, I do many things for a living — that is, to put food on the table for my family. I am self-employed. If you want to know whether I devote a lot of time to the Christian ministry, then YES, I do.

I hate religious bigotry of all kinds.

Me too. Of course, I define a religious bigot as being anyone who disagrees with me.
