What to Expect at Sunday LDS Meetings
The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ^ | JULY 2007

CLICK

Our primary family worship service is called sacrament meeting. This meeting is held in our meetinghouses on Sunday and lasts approximately 70 minutes. Visitors are welcome to attend. It is common for families to attend, and we are accustomed to having children as part of the congregation.

A typical meeting would consist of the following:

Hymns: Religious songs sung by the congregation (hymn books are provided).

Prayers: Offered by local Church members.

Partaking of the Sacrament (Communion): The sacrament is passed to members of the congregation.

Speakers: Typically a meeting will have two or three assigned speakers.

We do not pass a plate to request donations as part of our worship services.

Additional Meetings

Visitors are also welcome to attend other Sunday meetings that precede or follow sacrament meeting: Sunday School classes are offered for each age-group, beginning with twelve year olds. Primary meetings consist of a group service and age-oriented classes for children three through eleven years of age. A nursery is available for young children, ages eighteen months to three years. Young Women meetings provide classes for those twelve through seventeen years of age. Relief Society meeting is for women, ages eighteen years and older. Priesthood meetings provide age-oriented classes for males twelve years and older. Sacrament meetings and other meetings may be conducted in differing sequences, depending on the preference of local leaders. This site displays the beginning time of the three-hour block of meetings and the starting time of sacrament meeting.

Appropriate Dress

Those who attend will most likely be wearing their "Sunday best," which may include suits, sport coats, and ties for the men and dresses or skirts for the women. Children also typically dress up for Sunday.

Helpful Information

Our local congregations are called wards (or branches). The spiritual leader of each ward is called the bishop (or the branch president for branches). He is a member of the congregation who has been asked to serve as a volunteer in this position. Because we have a lay ministry rather than paid clergy, all Church service is voluntary.

I'm glad to see some discussion about the mormons here, because Gov. Romney is a candidat for the President and I know several people who are curious about his beliefs.

I think if someone is going to be the leader of the free world, it should be important for him to explain to every voter about what his core beliefs are. And,

I haven't seen where he really explains things very well. It looks like he doesn't want to talk about it very much.

THE ARTICLES OF FAITH OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

History of the Church, Vol. 4, pp. 535—541

1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.

2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.

8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

I wonder if it is a new thing, and next week we will have a meeting for the "Church of Christ" which I understand Fred Thompson is.

Oh, that would NEVER do, dear...after all, donchaknow, Fred hasn't even ANNOUNCED yet!

Maybe Ron Paul "His family was pious and Lutheran; two of his brothers became ministers. Paul’s five children were baptized in the Episcopal church, but he now attends a Baptist one"

Now THAT would be an interesting thread.

You do realize that pagans are basically anti western, leftists hippies right? They believe americans and christianity are responsible for most of the evil in the world and they value above all else, the environment and being “at one with the universe” and all that stupid crap. Sex and drugs are a big part of it, just like the hippies of the sixties. Wicca is even weirder.

I am assuming when you say she was a pagan, you are NOT meaning she was in the pagan motorcycle club. That is completely different. They are a strange anti social lot with violent tendencies and beliefs similar to the vikings, from what I understand. Did she ever have a “property of__” tattoo?

At what point in the ceremony is the koolaid passed around?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I was invited to a Mormon Christmas Party (at their State Gym) in Provo, Utah, in the 1980’s. Their "Panther Punch" was GREAT. They would not revel the receipt to me. Mormons can take a beer cooler and a chunk of dry ice and make some of the best Root Beer you have ever tasted. No, I am not a Mormon, nor would I want to be.

I wonder if it is a new thing, and next week we will have a meeting for the "Church of Christ" which I understand Fred Thompson is. That would be only fair, I believe. And then the next week, maybe another religion so the other canidates can be featured.

That would be Neat!

I want to know the religion of Hillery, Edwards and Obama So each week one could be in the spot light!

Our guys too but I am more worried about what they will do, none of them fest up that they are really Marxist!

There is so much about Mormonism you won’t hear or see openly. You really have to search, or be an active practicing member for a long time.

Heree is a list of interesting sermons found in the Journal of Discourses. Now understand that it isn’t approved “doctine” but all these words were uttered by men who were chosen to be “mouthpieces of God.” They were supposed apostles and “prophets” of the LDS Church and these messages were recorded at the time of the addresses by someone that was trained BY THE CHURCH to record them. Many LDS will deny these teachings, yet they still use the Journal of Discourses OFTEN in their own meetings and speeches.

1-Lucifer/Satan sang among the Morning stars while in spirit
2-and of course Jesus was also in spirit;
3-and Heavenly Father is the Father of all of us,
4-how do you not understand this?

Well, resty I see what you are saying here, but you don't think that anyone on FR is actually thinking about VOTING for Hillary, Edwards and Obama do you? I think we should all know what the beliefs are of the men we are considering for the nominee.

Thanks-

Some of them...I've heard of.

Just sheds more light..

And IMO, brings potential trouble to a Pubbie "nominated" Romney....Hillary would pull out all the stops, and unleash the hounds on this. We can bet our last dollar on that.

And also IMO, not the same as JFK being the first Catholic POTUS. Not the same at all.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh there, but I’m just fed up with religions adopting slick marketing schemes and inserting PC language into their discourse. That’s simply not what they should be about.

My apologies to anyone I may have offended with my comments on the use of the word, “meetinghouse,” which, as you say, may be used correctly.

I just see too many PC-generated, artificially-constructed “trendy” words around these days, and I’m frankly sick of them.

Anyhoo, sorry to get so upset about it.

We now return you to your weekend.

That is my opinion too.

Most of the “wacky” beliefs of different branches of Christianity are somewhat agreed by other branches. For example, most Christians would understand but not necessarily believe that handling snakes would require a great deal of faith. All Christians believe that the body of Christ is shared somehow in the Communion or Eucharist , but not all believe in transubstantiation. Most if not all Christians understand where the belief of Christ’s body being represented in the bread and wine comes from.

Many of the doctrines of Mormonism are strange, and totally unrelated to Christianity or the Bible. The fact that Mormonism tries to hide the vast differences is one indication of just how strange and embarrassing many of it’s doctrines really are.

These strange doctrine will come to light in this Presidential election. Most Christians will find the doctrines, covenants, and ordinances downright strange, if not totally frightening.

I doubt if many Christians will simply say, “It’s okay that the President believe this stuff....even Christian beliefs are wacky.”

No they will say (IMO), “This isn’t Christian. Anyone who believes this stuff must be wacky.”

In no way will it endear Romney to the voters.
