PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours.
His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live. (more at link)

"S_E_A_R_C_H" Before posting. The word "search" does not exist in the vocabulary of some FReepers. If they even do search, their excuse is always that they didn't find anything. *sigh*

Well, I did search, at least the front two pages... what’s your problem? If it was a dupe, why did you bother to read it and post your snide remarks?
Just needed to get your AH points in for the day?

I personally think the cat is killing them. Its the only logical conclusion. Were it a person who had the “uncanny nack” for visiting each person before they died they’d be brought up on charges.
Get rid of the cat.

From what I saw on tv tonight the cat lets the staff know when a person is failing & they can get the family there in time to say goodbye. Since this is a ward for dementia people that are old & failing the cat seems to know who is going before the staff does. I don’t think the cat is doing a bad thing so theres no need to get rid of it. Maybe it can comfort these people somehow....

Maybe the cat only jumps up on the beds of people who were cat haters as a last bit of revenge.

pandora,
My thoughts too. Read Dean Koontz’s “One Door Away From Heaven”. Might be fiction, but he touches a nerve with me anyway.

Mayhap if the cat were tossed out, the death rate would drop (psychological effect and all).
I still think the cat’s in it for the insurance money.

Thanks , I am always looking for a good book to read. I think many animals sense death. When I am at my summer trailer I have no internet & just 2 channels on TV. One that is NJTV or something close to it. I saw a show last week that was about dogs that are learning to smell cancer. Maybe in time before drs can find it. I think we can learn much from animals. I watch my 4 cats & 5 dogs play and its a zoo here. I just have a soft spot for taking in cats. My newest one is a Siamese who was terribly abused. Someone broke his jaw. He is all fixed & well now. He chases my shih tzus all through the house and I laugh all day. My animals always know when I am upset or depressed so Oscar knowing death is coming really isn’t a surprise to me.

Pandora,
“One Door Away From Heaven” isn’t about a dog or cat being able to just sense death, but to sense God. The little girl that’s the heroine is a firecracker too :)
Sounds like we have a lot in common. Glad to meet you, if in a limited sense.
