Sad thing is, Duncan IS a great guy, I like and respect him very much.

Very true, and a lot of his supporters are doing him no support by trashing other conservative candidates like they are.. if the same eye of scrutiny was put on, for example, Hunter's campaign staff, I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar questionable people as Abraham (actually, there is at least one that, if you didn't say who he worked for, would solicit the same reaction as Abraham..)

The difference is, I don't want to trash Hunter and I don't think it is relevant in relation to Hunter's positions.

I'm getting tireder of him in a hurry.

He hasn't articulated a single specific position, his wife apparently is pissing off his campaign staff, and he keeps delaying his declaration date.

I'm not impressed...

Got it here as well. Of course I have already donated $ to his effort.

You do realize that Congressman Duncan Hunter doesn’t even register on most polls: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls
whereas former Senator Fred Thompson is either leading or in second place in most polls. Also, the last time the United States elected a current or former House member to the presidency was Abraham Lincoln in 1860 (on a fragmented four-way ticket). Mr. Lincoln was our 16th president, while we are working on electing our 44th president next year! I’m sure Mr. Hunter is a fine man, a stalwart conservative, and might make a good president, BUT IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!! Holding back support for Mr. Thompson merely makes it more likely that former Mayor Giuliani or former Governor Romney win the nomination. Is that what you want?! Have you ever heard the saying: “Perfect is the enemy of the good”?

K, I’ll bite who in your opinion is as conservative and electable

Until Fred enters the race, he is, by definition, not electable at all. One needs to be on the ballot.

But, in the spirit of your question: I'm at the stage where I am eliminating primary candidates, not endorsing them. So far, I have eliminated Giuliani, McCain, and Paul, for various reasons. Of those in the race, I like Hunter's record best, and Romney's stated policy ideas best.

This is interesting:

Newt Gingrich has said he won’t make up his mind whether to seek the Republican presidential nomination until after the summer, but there are signs he is warming up to Fred Thompson as his preferred GOP candidate.

“I’ve always said it was unlikely I would run,” and if Thomson runs “and does well, then I think that makes it easier for me not to run,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press last week.

But on the same day as the interview, the former Speaker of the House’s communications director Rich Galen said he had signed on as an advisor to Thompson’s not yet official campaign.

In another possibly telling sign, Gingrich and his wife had dinner with Thompson and his wife at Thompson’s home in Virginia on July 16, according to The Politico.

In my comment I asked “who in your opinion is both conservative and electable based on past behavior”

Can you really consider Mitt conservative based on past behavior? Past behavior = words and deeds” Don’t get me wrong, I like Romney but his conservative bonafides are deeply troubling.

I also like Hunter a lot but unfortunately he is eminently unelectable.

Sorry. I did't mean to imply that you criticized Hunter.

I believe in Reagan's 11th commandment about not criticizing another Republican-but I guess that's part of the primaries.

Abraham, despite his weakness as a politician and bureaucrat, IS a fairly successful GOP apparachnik and knows all the state and local power brokers across the country.

Abraham did rebuild the Michigan GOP from nothing.

Still wary about this though. Felt that there were so many conservatives Fred could have choosed from. Oh well.

I didn’t think that you thought I criticized Hunter.

I was sort of doing a blanket apology because in one or two of my posts on another thread I sort of went of on a rant against a few folks who suddenly “didn’t like Fred anymore” and I wanted to be clear that I was not criticizing any Hunter supporters. Hunter is great. Hunter supporters are solid conservatives.

I wish I could believe totally in the 11th commandment, and I try to adhere to it, but it’s very difficult when the Paulites show up.

Yes. Not as conservative as I am, but a heck of a lot better than some so-called Republican governors I could name. Better than a good many members of the Senate. Better by far than the current frontrunning candidate, Rudy. Better than the current President is on many issues, such as fiscal prudence and border enforcement.

You gotta remember that FR is NOT the general public. Hunter is much more conservative and much less electable, based on both of their past behaviors.

Freds staff needs to see the Numbers USA Web site and the Video.

Numbers USA should be on every Freepers Favorites list. I saw the video and forwarded the link to the Florida Web site.

The guy is talking about LEGAL IMMIGRATION, and that will destroy our base of Traditional Voters in 20 years.

Senator Spencer Abraham, a first-term senator from Michigan who has emerged as an unlikely champion of legal immigration.

I guess I don't see how this is a problem.

Perhaps La Raza, back in 1997, was a completely different organization than it has become today. I don't know.

And about the Islam angle: I do know that Fred Thompson has been unafraid to use the word "islamofascist" and has cited writings from the time of Barbary Pirates, where Islam is noted as being NOT a religion of peace.

I'm not worried about Fred being a sympathizer of Islam.

Someone as intensely concerned about states rights as he is, I am NOT worried about him supporting some sort of North American Union. I don't buy that just because he is a member of CFR that he is ready to give away our sovereignty to some global entity. NOTHING that he has written--that I have seen-- suggests even a HINT of that. Until I see something HE has written that declares he is all for a "One World Government", I am unconcerned about his comments about a global ECONOMY.

So far, I am pretty comfortable with Fred Thompson as a candidate. Hopefully, he will enter the race soon and put his cards on the table. Until then, a write-up from Debbie is not going to change my mind.

Anything that would show he can actually discuss the details of the principles conservatives hold dear.

I've satisfied myself that he has ample ability in this regard by reading many of his speeches on the senate floor via THOMAS.gov. His arguments in favor of the balanced budget amendment and federalism, and against entitlement spending, federal government overreach, out-of-control regulatory agencies, and compromising national security in the name of international commerce were hard-hitting and eloquent. If you're interested, I highly recommend checking them out.

I have read more on him. Pro Arab, yes, and by virtue of that he “supports” people of the Muslim faith. I think it’s a stretch past that. I think we will find his concern was something that we have seen here on Free Republic at times, increased hyperbole against all Arabs due to 9/11. He is basically against profiling all people of Arab decent. I can’t hold that against him.

Now does that bring him into the same sphere as some less savory Arab groups or individuals, well look at the Doctors in Britain. They were respect members of British Society until that one day. It is a tough call, but I don’t see him supporting anti American activities.

He has articulated positions, the one on Hazelton for instance. There are many posted many times on many threads.
Like the ABC commentaries, info on Fredipedia, all the interviews he has given where he has given policy ideas.

The stuff about his wife may be true and may not. Reporters like to throw mud around and see if anything sticks. A lot of times they are guessing. I would never believe the words of a MSM reporter. They are probably trying to push someone out to say something so they’ll have a story. Is there any proof of what they are saying? The shifting staff seems to have proof, but the reason why it happened does not.

He also has explained his reasoning on when to declare in many interviews. Where have you been?

Juvenile.

I’m sick of the anti-Fred s@@t already, and the pro-Hunter s@@t. Hunter doesn’t have a prayer, Fred does. Suck it up already ! He’ll announce when he’s good ‘n ready. It’s his campaign, not your’s. When you run for President, you can announce when you’re ready. Be patient, be calm. I’m sick of the griping about Fred. He’s too this, he’s not too that. He’s hired this person, he’s ignored that person. Too bad ! You don’t like it, vote for Hillary.
I’m voting for Fred, no matter what. I don’t care if he’s
hired Spence Abraham or Spence Moses ! I don’t care if he voted for McCain-Feingold or Fein-McCainGold. I don’t give a s@@t already. He’s conservative enough, he’s electable, and I’m supporting him.
