Sounds like Stern did a Selig on this one.

$260K a year is okay money I suppose. You do travel about 8-9 months a year but you stay in decent hotels and can likely make some cash on the side doing clinics.

Ok money?! Perspective is everything. For $260K/year, sign me up!

$260K is good but if you are never home then there is a trade off to that. Perspective as you say. I had one year when I made more than that and I had to travel ten days a month to do it. Talk about having no life and I was single.

I was looking at the salary figure that the reporter mentioned like that had some significance here. Refs don’t make huge money so a guy with even a few issues could certainly become a target for the mob.

If you don’t consider $260,000 to be huge money you have perception issues.
To: JZelle
You’d have an “anger management” too if you had guys named Vinnie leaning on you day and night.

If you dont consider $260,000 to be huge money you have perception issues. Well, Donaghy is spending all night working on a hardwood floor with guys who make a minimum of ten times that - so he's probably the one with perception issues. ;)

It’s hard to ref an NBA game with two shattered kneecaps.

Hmmmm. I guess in the NBA, the thugs aren’t just in players’ uniforms.

$260K is likely about what the average NBA player makes for one quarter of play.
Still not a bad salary, although NBA refs start at around $100,000 per year. The more experienced refs earn up to $300,000.
To: GSWarrior
NBA refs work 60 nights a year. At 260 large that amounts to over 4300 a night before per diem.
Not bad.

I have made more than that in a year and it wasn’t huge money considering what Uncle Sam took. Plus, the work required to make it and time away were substantial.
I wouldn’t do that lifestyle today.....

They travel quite a bit though so take the number and then add 2x’s that amount for travel to and from plus other league requirements.

NBA refs work 60 nights a year. You have to factor in their travel into that equation, as very few of them work games in their home area. It is not how many games they work, but how many nights are they gone from home.
All in all though, $260,000 per year plus all expenses sounds pretty good.

I think it comes out to about 8 months a year of travel with about 4 months off. Good life but not lavish when you consider the time away from home and family.

Plus he lives in Philly so some games(Phil, NYC, NJ) would almost be home games.
