Thompson picks Abraham

You're Fred Thompson. As a former U.S. senator you had a pleasant and lucrative career acting in a tv show. Then an opening unexpectedly appeared in the contest for the GOP nomination, because there were no candidates acceptable to conservatives. The most important issue to conservatives was immigration. You made a few general statements indicating a readiness to enforce our country's immigration laws and guard its borders. These comments immediately translated into significant popular support and turned you into a viable prospect for the Republican nomination, even though you had not formally declared your candidacy. Then you appointed as your campaign manager former U.S. senator Spencer Abraham from Michigan. Abraham is most famous as an arrogant open-borders fanatic in his work as chairman of the Senate immigration sub-committee in the late 1990s. He was so bad on immigration that in 2000 Michigan conservatives and Republicans voted for Spencer's challenger, pro-abortion liberal Democrat Debbie Stabenow, in order to drive Spencer from the Senate. Abraham lost his Senate seat because of his commitment to open borders, pure and simple.

Are you not aware that it was your statements on immigration that, mild as they were, gave you a shot at the presidency? ...

If that's indicative of Fred Thompson's thinking on borders, yeech. Spencer Abraham was THAT bad that Michigan conservatives gave him the boot. He makes Mel Martinez look reasonable on open borders.

Um, aren’t we supposed to vote for Thompson’s ideas? His aides’ don’t really matter once we hear what Thompson has to say on the issue. I’d hold judgment until we hear that.

His aides do matter! Appointing a loser like Abraham as YOUR campaign manger isn't a sign of good political judgment. Debbie Stabenow is a liberal but she voted AGAINST the shamnesty bill in the Senate. Abraham would have voted for it in a heartbeat. Of all the people in the world, Thompson needed to pick a guy who is the epitome of everything conservatives loathe? Stabenow is not much to look at but on immigration she gets it. Abraham didn't and that's why he lost.

Aides do matter because right now, we don’t have much to go on.

I really would like to believe in fred but he has to show more and this is not helping.

But that is the point, if Fred Thompson doesn’t actually get out there and tell us his positions, we must speculate based on the people he is surrounding himself with. His actions (few that they are) are speaking louder than his words.

Yes, it matters who a person surrounds himself with...etc., but Abraham’s job is campaign manager. Why do you think Fred picked him?

perhaps for the same reason Rudy picked Vitter. They (rudy and fred) didn’t know what they were doing.

Not true, for one, and the people who did vote Dangerously Incompetent Debbie into office got what they deserved.

Probably to manage the campaign?

Just guessing here.

I was surprised at the choice, but Spence did do a great job building the Michigan GOP, so I would bet he'll be very good for building the national and state Fred organizations.

Ridiculous piece, Ronald Reagan chose George Bush for Vice president. A campaign manager is chosen for people he knows and management skills not for his personal feelings about individual legislation.

If Fred is not for closing the border—we’re dead.
By “we” I mean THE WHOLE BLEEPING COUNTRY—not just the GOP.

If Fred had picked a true conservative, it would have been trumpeted as a positive for Fred. We all have been guilty of sometimes over-looking our own imperfections and those of our friends.

Abraham’s defeat was a precursor to the ‘06 elections. He was defeated because he disdained conservatives and was unable to rally their support. I do not know of any conservatives who voted for Stabenow to spite Abraham.

I am from Michigan and had great hopes for our GOP Senator, but they did not last for long.

A clear statement on the border issue by Thompson is needed NOW.

“Ronald Reagan chose George Bush for Vice president”

If Reagan did “choose” Bush Sr. for Vice-President, it would been done kicking and screaming. He really had no use for the man. Bush landing the V.P. spot will, to me, remain one of the great mysteries of politics, like Ike choosing Warren and Brennan for the Supreme Court.

I have no idea, but Fred Thompson seems to think he’s the man for the job. If he’s not he will be unceremoniously fired and another chosen. Not exactly anything new in campaigns. A lot of the better known people were already taken because of Freds late entry.

Reagan would’ve preferred Nevada’s Paul Laxalt, but he thought having two candidates from neighboring states would be a disadvantage.
