WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is replacing his acting campaign manager with former senator and energy secretary Spencer Abraham and Florida GOP strategist Randy Enright.
Thompson spokeswoman Linda Rozett said acting campaign manager Tom Collamore, former vice president of food and tobacco giant Altria, still will advise the campaign. Collamore has helped organize the campaign for Thompson, who has not officially jumped into the race.
Thompson has established a "testing the waters" committee that allows him to raise money for a presidential bid. He is expected to formally kick off his candidacy in September.
"The Friends of Fred Thompson have made a number of changes as they prepare to enter the next phase, adding new experience and political strength to the organization," Rozett said.
Enright has served as Florida regional political director for the Republican National Committee and was executive director of the Republican Party of Iowa and the Republican Party of Florida.
Abraham is a former Michigan senator who lost a bid for reelection in 2000 to Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
One of them is a former founding member of the federalist society.
He seems to be trying to add them on whenever possible.
Spencer Abraham is a good man: it was a d*mned shame when he lost the Senate seat. He’s a Christian Arab-American, a communicant of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.
Losing Collamore was a good move - he’s the guy who flubeed the abortion billing record response.
Fred still needs to address it himself though.
I only know one thing. This is looking like more of the same already. A Senator and a tobacco vice president. I want to see change in the next president. Someone who looks out for the people (common people) not corporations.
A quick look on Wikipedia(Yeah,I know) has some not flattering things on immigration.I saw the term “Open Borders”.Can’t be good
I voted for Spence; still, I wonder how ANYONE could lose to Debbie Stabacow?
Never trust a woman over sixty who still calls herself “Debby”.
And you’ll see it when NBC is through getting their money in his re-runs for the summer. If he declares for president, NBC would be obliged to give equal time to all other candidates whenever Fred gets air time in Law and Order. Or at least that is the way I understand it. I reckon he feels some loyalty to them, and maybe he should.
He needed to replace Mark Corallo, his campaign spokesman.
The POTUS that adheres to and defends the Constitution is the one that looks out for the little guy.
I want to know who keeps making then postponing the dates. Are these dates coming from “his people”...or just speculation from the media.
If it’s coming from his camp, I can see it being used against him in the campaign...a commercial about decisiveness being a Presidential necessity and then the bit about July, no August, no September, etc.
I seen it too. Very disturbing.
Plus Abraham lost to Debbie Stabenow. That's like losing to Ted Kennedy in the 100 meter dash.
Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham
Spencer Abraham was sworn in as the tenth Secretary of Energy on January 20, 2001, following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Prior to becoming Energy Secretary, Abraham represented Michigan in the United States Senate from 1995 to 2001.
Elected in 1994, he served on the Budget, Commerce, Science and Transportation, Judiciary, and Small Business Committees. He also chaired two-important subcommittees: Manufacturing and Competitiveness, and Immigration.
A forceful voice for the business community and free enterprise, Abraham endorsed policies and practices that promote and enhance America's competitiveness and global leadership. Among other things, Abraham was a leader in the Senate on support of free trade, legal and regulatory reform, and tax reform.
Representing Michigan in the Senate made Abraham keenly aware of the many issues impacting manufacturers, businesses, and consumers.
In addition, Abraham was widely viewed by his colleagues and most observers as the Senator with the best understanding of high-tech policy and issues and the contributions this important economic sector makes to America's economy and global success.
Among other accomplishments, Abraham authored the Electronic Signature in Global and National Commerce Act, establishing a federal framework for on-line contracts and signatures; the Government Paperwork Elimination Act, and the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which protects Internet domain names for businesses and persons against copyright and trademark infringements.
Maintaining affable relationships with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, Abraham authored twenty-two pieces of legislation that have been signed into law, an unprecedented accomplishment for a freshman Senator.
Before his election to the Senate, Abraham served as co-chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) from 1991 to 1993.
Prior to his tenure at the NRCC and following a successful term as the Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, Abraham was tapped to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff to Vice President Dan Quayle from 1990 to 1991. In this senior position, he worked closely with the Vice President and senior administration officials, managing the daily operations of the Vice President's office, budget, and staff. Abraham was also active in the affairs of the Vice President's Competitiveness Council, the Vice President's operation designed to provide administrative leadership on issues pertaining to U.S. business competitiveness.
At 30, Abraham was elected to serve as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, a position he held from 1983 to 1990. Abraham took over a party deeply in debt and not holding any major positions in the state government, but quickly began to reestablish the party as one of the strongest state political operations in the country.
Spencer Abraham and his wife, Jane, live in Michigan and Virginia with their three children. He holds a law degree from Harvard University and is a native of East Lansing, Michigan.
Sorry, that sounds like a democrat talking point.
Whats wrong with Corporations? A lot a people work in these Corporations,These Corporations Signify Capitalism,Its what we are about.
A Least he’s moving Forward,Look for Late Aug announcement just in time for Sept 17 Debacle, He’s goin to Blow doors Wide Open!
Or wishful thinking?
Actually, September was mentioned well before the July dates were discussed. Check the Fred threads, it's all there.
Agreed. It worries me that Spence will lead Thompson’s campaign.
The Paleos here were up in arms against him, don't remember why though.
