You are right. Progressive is another “code” word for communist. During the early 1950’s (the “red” scare in Hollywood), there was a “progressive” party flourishing in those days.

And they have their own magazine to prove it. It's called The Progressive. Comes out of Wisconsin (Madison I think) and you can't get much farther to the moonbat left than the stuff in it.
