I had acquaintances who were told that their child would be born with Downs. They agonized, but when someone recommended a friend of their's who adopted Downs babies, they realized that if a perfect stranger could love their child, so could they.
They continued through the pregnancy (even being told at 8 months that they could still abort!), and gave birth to a perfect little girl. (The father was barely restrained at delivery time, and the doctor had to leave immediately or be badly beaten.)
A couple of years later they adopted a Downs child. Really good people.

In our case, the stupid moron nurse-midwife misunderstood the statistics of the outcome of a pre-natal test. In her criminal stupidity, she, of course, raised the specter of “choices” that we had.
