Jefferson's Campaign Donations Virtually Stop
New Orleans Congressman Faces Federal Indictment
UPDATED: 10:52 am CDT July 20, 2007

NEW ORLEANS -- While facing federal bribery charges, U.S. Rep. William Jefferson of New Orleans managed to raise less than $20,000 for a 2008 re-election campaign, according to a review of federal campaign finance reports by The Times-Picayune.

The federal reports show Jefferson's campaign debt stands at $281,884 in outstanding loans. He received nine contributions, totaling $18,500, in the second quarter of the year.

By contrast, U.S. Rep. Jim McCrery of Shreveport led the Louisiana House delegation in fundraising, posting $424,354 in contributions between April 1 and June 30 -- leaving him with nearly $1 million in the bank.

The FBI raided Jefferson's home in August 2005. Contributions have virtually stopped since he was indicted June 4 on federal racketeering, fraud and bribery charges.

The only donation to his campaign after the indictment came from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, a national labor union with chapters in Louisiana. The group's $2,500 donation was made June 7, but a spokesman for the group said the check went out before the indictment.

It depends on the district he’s in and the $$$ he gets from Howie Dean & Co.The filthy RATS here in the Gay State have gerrymandered all 10 of our Congressional districts in such a way so that 10 OJ Simpsons could all win if they ran as RATS.If Jefferson’s district is the same then he’ll have no problem.

That's barely an ice tray's worth.

Why give to the campaign, when you can give directly to the candidate and bypass all those messy federal campaign disclosures?

Lets just say that as New Orleanian recently relocated.. Jefferson will still win because of the district he is in. The same district that keeps Louisiana a dem place in statewide elections because its the largest population center and tends to be very Democratic.

I think it says less about the non-intelligence of Nawlins voters and more about the fact that they are still too busy collecting welfare and committing felonies in Houston.

the check went out before the indictment.

That's a great excuse. I'll remember that one.

The fact that he was able to raise $18,500 is disturbing.

Just how MANY times were these people dropped on their heads as infants?

Just how MANY times were these people dropped on their heads as infants?

Does that really explain RAT corruption?

“Just how MANY times were these people dropped on their heads as infants?”

There are actually many intelligent people here. There is really no explaining why things transpire the way they do (Nagin!), but maybe the heat, humidity and the food has something to do with it ;) Politics aside, the day to day mindset is just different from anything you will run into elsewhere in the country. However, when it comes to the political aspect of things, it’s not just New Orleans that plays into it, after all this is the state that elected Huey Long, his brother Earl, Edwin Edwards etc. etc. To those of us natives who can step back and see the big picture, it’s always been hard to understand, but I’ve had to come to grips with the fact that it will likely never change.
