Thus the reason the entire SS system must be privatized. And your benefits should be directly tied to the ACTUAL contribution you made - much like an IRA/Annuity is.
Nothing in the US Constitution mandates (or even authorizes) the Federal Government exact a tax on working citizens to pay for retirement benefits for retirees and those who cannot (or claim to not be able to) work.
I agree with all of that but the genie is out of the bottle now. You *might* be able to alter social security somewhat but you’ll never eliminate it without creating an economic catastrophe. You’d first have to get health care costs under control. To do that, you’d have to convince people that health care is not a civil right. Plus, you’d have to re-establish the network of faith-based charities that often filled the gaps before government took over. IOW, little is going to change during your lifetime, or your children’s lifetime, or your children’s childrens’ lifetime. Unless, of course, the entire government collapses and people have to start over from scratch. That will be a bitter pill for a lot of people.
