Then there are people like me. Now that my children are all grown, I would like to have a part-time job. Since I haven’t been employed outside of the home for years, I probably would be able to make $8 to $10 an hour, at best. However, I would be taxed at my husband’s rate, so between the extra costs involved in my working (clothes, commute, etc.) and the taxes I would pay on the piddling income, I might just about break even.
Yes, lets assume a worker picks 60 heads of lettuce in an hour (far less than actual, but stay with me here). We pay illegal immigrants, what, $3.00 and hour? So, the cost to pick lettuce is about 5 cents a piece (5 cents times 60 = $3.00)
If we no longer had illegals to pick lettuce, lets assume we had to pay someone $20 an hour. The cost of picking lettuce would now be about 33 cents per head. So paying $20 an hour for lettuce picking would add a whopping 28 cents to the cost of a head of lettuce. Big frickin deal.
It will take awhile for Americans to break back into the building trades. The contractors are not easily going to give up their lion’s share.
