President Bush yesterday said Americans will soon realize they need the immigrants and foreign temporary workers that would have been allowed by his immigration bill, which was defeated in the Senate last month.
Mr. Bush, in a town hall session in Nashville, Tenn., also refused to say whether he will pardon two U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted of shooting a fleeing drug-smuggling suspect, saying the prosecutor was a friend of his who made his case to the jury that convicted the agents.
If Mr. Bush was hoping the immigration issue would disappear after his bill's failure, those hopes were dashed, as he was asked repeatedly about border security during the forum meant to highlight his commitment to cutting the deficit.
"The bill failed and I can't make a prediction to you at this point, sir, where it's going to head," the president told one questioner. "I can make you a prediction, though, that pretty shortly people are going to be knocking on people's doors saying, man, we're running out of workers."
Mr. Bush said there are workers who will do jobs Americans aren't doing in the agriculture sector in particular, and without them the jobs will go unfilled.

We have legal workers that go home (south of the border) after harvest season. There are a couple of hundred of them right down the road from me right now. I don't know a soul that thinks they shouldn't be here.
Why don't we try replacing illegal aliens with the able-bodied American citizens that are now sitting home collecting our tax dollars? Reform welfare and you have a whole new labor force all of a sudden. It may take them awhile to learn that they actually have to work ... but they will do so before they allow themselves to starve and have their wheels repossessed.
Perhaps because I agree with it? You're not very bright.
Do not confuse a globalist with the facts.
Regulation and tax is the reason illegal foreign workers are useful. They don't bring the same regulatory and tax burden with them. Bush is saying that pretty soon employers will need new ways to break the law.
Try finding the time to read them. [hoot]
Right! These guys defending illegals know all this. They want to go with the status quo so they can continue to exploit cheap labor and pass the true cost on to us.All this poor hard working people crap is just that, crap. Americans who are picking up the tab for their cheap labor are the poor hard working ones.
I work for a fortune 500 company, I see the workforce transition.
Hundreds of foreign workers here on campus now. The almighty H1B visa program you see. Bring’em here to work at their home country wage.
Longtime workers of 15 to 20 years are layed off, then brought back in as contractors for less pay and NO benefits.
At a time of record corp profits, American workers are seeing their jobs shifted overseas, frozen wages, benefit cuts.
All the while, top level exec’s are hauling in the doe in the form of lavish compensation packages.
We had one exec leave the company with a golden parachute of close to $30 million. This was more than one of our divisions made in profit for that particular year.
We read all the time about how low the unemployment rate remains.
Americans do not realize that these numbers posted by the government are a complete sham.
Just how many unemployed illegals are here in America?
Replacing well paying positions with lower wage service sector positions will make the unemployment rate appear low....what is this doing to middle class America?
Are you suggesting that I’m “defending illegals?” Because I made a comment about an inaccurate number?
I know, I have been seeing it for years.
I think I know who the one is who is not very bright! You are a great example of who I speak. You really are incapable defending your argument.
What argument, that attributing forty murders per day to illegal aliens is inaccurate? I'll defend it all day, if you wish.
How many murders are committed by illegals every day.
Certainly less than forty. Probably significantly less.
Put a conservative number on it.
I told you it wouldn’t take long. LOL The man followed true to form.
For a starting-point, I suppose you could take the ratio of illegal aliens convicted of murder to legal residents convicted of murder, and apply it to the total (murders commited, solved and unsolved, in the U.S.).
These days the cell phones are prized higher than wheels.
Americans realize that they no longer need Bush.
What ever the number we could eliminate it by getting rid of the perp.
