We each have our opinions.

Where, in any of my comments, did I defend the police actions, or say anything near what you are talking about?

I live in X,

the number of times anyone has ever needed the right to free speech is zero, since there are officials everywhere openly speaking.

In my observations, when they take a break, it is always away from the crowd, with more than one leo with them. I have not seen the police at these events, walk around carrying any food or beverage.

You are imagining things. I see cops wandering around using both hands to eat all kinds of messy food.

To further illustrate my point: Being killed with their own weapon is a very real danger cops face.

by a black female Sheriff’s deputy! What does this deputy’s race have to do with anything?

Maybe the same thing that her gender had to do with it -- specificity. The article later says they are trying to find out the identity of "which officer started this whole thing."

We obviously have not been in the same place, at the same time.

Here's a more global thought:

Somehow, I just don’t think a group of families, with a number of open-carry members, walking around the festival, would attract less of a police interest.

Come to think of it, isn't that kind of a shame? Can we be content if our society is trending toward such helpless asthenia that the sight of people prepared to defend themselves effectively gives lots of people a severe, acute, advanced case of the vapors?

We delegate the duty of charity to the government. We delegate, more and more, the duty to care for our elders and our young to the government. When a teenager has a wreck and dies, while her passenger suffers a crippling spinal cord injury, the parents and her friends blame the government for not putting a lower speed limit on the road.

It's clear that civilization postpones the taking up of adult responsibilities and freedoms in order to educate the young. But to put them off forever, cannot be good.

To have declined to the point where frankly exhibiting one's readiness to protect oneself is guaranteed to make people feel nervous and to think they have a right not to have to look at a handgun is not clearly a good thing.

Eating a waffle when confronted by a testosterone addled officer (male or female) is a darned good way to escalate a situation right into deadly force.

It would be an unprofessional officer indeed that would let such behavior influence his handling of any situation, but sadly we know that is exactly what we're talking about here.

One of the responsibilities of carrying is de-escalation whenever possible. He chose escalation. Instead of leaving with his gun and his family, he went to jail. He carried a piece to protect his famiy and left his family unprotected.
This guy chose a poor course of action, right or not.

Interesting. If I had fed my face in public when I was patrolling the county fair, my behind would have been handed to me by the Sheriff.

(I think MrB was offering an analogy.)

Evidently you didn’t read what I said. I said I doubt there would have been the level of Arrogance displayed by this group of Gestapo agents.

Yes, I called them Gestapo and until the Police in this country remember that there is a Constitution that is THE law of the land, I will continue to call them that.

“Chet’s wife attempted to record the scene on her cellular phone and was told she would be arrested if she did not secure her phone immediately!!! “

Somehow, to me, this is the most disturbing thing about the incident. The Gestapo demanded that no recording be made of their actions.

The only reason that they would not want it recorded is if they knew they were acting illegally, or in some punishable manner.

No official should be able to force a citizen to stop recording, audio or video, any actions the official is taking in his official capacity.

I guess it's been a while since you were in Norfolk, VA.

'zackly

My wife was in Norfolk on business a few weeks back and had a tire blow-out. Service truck came to repair it and told her, "This is a bad area. Stand over there by my truck. If anything happens to me while I'm fixing this, there's a gun on the front seat."

He wasn't joking.

The number of instances where anyone has needed a weapon, at these festivals, is zero.

33 students at Virginia Tech all felt the same level of overconfidence that you do.......

And virtually every victim of every crime in this country never thought it would actually happen to them......

I prefer concealed carry, for OPSEC. You might be able to kick-@ss if you see them coming, but if little Johnnie Gang-banger decideds your Sig might look better in his hooptie, you’re going to take a half-full 40oz bottle of beer to the skull from behind.
Self Defense doesn’t start with firearms, it starts with reality.

Years ago I went to a Grateful Dead concert at the Norfolk Coliseum. We left a little early to get a jump start on the long drive back home and saw two long columns of patrol cars lining up all along the exit road. It looked something out of Eastwood’s “The Gauntlet”.

We were happy to leave town.

I prefer to think that in some places/instances, we have risen to the point, where having a gun showing, isn’t considered necessary. I’ve had a concealed permit for a number of years, in 2 states, but I never carry at these kinds of family events. I’m 56yo, and in my entire civilian life, I have never had cause or even thought I had cause, to need my weapon.
