After the last couple of days of mad scramble, equipment problems, etc. (I have been on location, working between peeks in at FR and naps, I'm not sure how I got that screwed up.

Thank you for pointing out the fact I was in gross error as to the state of the firearm (and the nature of the law involved).

Yep, under those circumstances, no one should have ever surprized him, regardless.

I have had some sleep since I made the comment, and I agree, I had that all screwed up.

Thanks.

Sic’em Dawg. Sounds like at least a $500,000 judgment against the City to me...hopefully more. There’s nothing like a good financial kick in the crotch to get the bureaucrat’s attention.

Wouldn’t it be great. He could hold enough to pay for his medical care and inconvenience and then split the rest between VCDL and some Norfolk charity. THAT would be a lesson the city might remember for a little while. The problem of course is that the people who are really responsible are also immune form any consequent harm.

What do I do? Try to force the tanker to turn away and get run over ? Or, do the prudent thing and tack out of his way

It's enlightening that you would compare some city PD to an impervious tanker with unstoppable momentum vs. a citizen to a relatively powerless sailboat avoiding getting run over, whereas I compare the PD and citizen to fellow posters upon equal footing, one of whom is attempting to push the other around. I think I know which one Thomas Jefferson would pick if given a choice between the two as his vision for America.

No analogy is perfect but here goes anyway...

Tanker analogy:
If you don't mind having your right-of-way (rights) taken from you, then I guess you can continue to tack out of the way(submit) of the tanker (PD) Just don't be surprised if you do this day after day that you're not allowed to sail in the Bay anymore because the tanker captains (city council) don't want to deal with you being in their way (power-grab.)

Poster analogy:
Going back to my example, notice how when it when it's two posters on equal footing and then I claimed authority I didn't have and tried to silence you, you defied my b.s. demand and continued to post anyway.

Chet knew his rights, cops abused their authority, and Chet stood for his rights. The city council and cops will hopefully soon learn about the equal footing part from the lawsuit.

We can argue about whether the analogies fit or which is closer to reality, but I choose to back those fighting for our rights and not those submitting to the abuse.

Personally, I applaud this man's courage and willingness to stand up for what he believes in. And you disparage him. He takes a risk in the fight for freedom, and you spit in his face for his trouble.

This guy has cajones which are sorely lacking in America today, and shamefully I don't think I could have stood as strong. He stood up to their abuse and they've backed down because he called their bluff. Now they have a lawsuit coming their way for their actions, and hopefully this will be settled in Liberty's favor. Certainly it will make the community leaders think twice.

IMO, people who cherish freedom should be thanking Chet Szymecki (and the others involved) for carrying the burden of Liberty for us, not dissing him for stirring the pot. Freedom doesn't just happen. If you go along to get along, you won't like where you end up. I, for one, am not going there without a fight.

Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Tolerance in the face of tyranny is no virtue. - Barry Goldwater

Date and Time of VCDL’s visit to Norfolk City Council, from a VCDl e-mail

It’s time for VCDL’s to address Norfolk City Council on the Norfolk Police harassing two gun owners and charging a third under an invalid ordinance, all within a few weeks of each other, and all at different locations.

In order to give all of you plenty of notice so that you can attend, VCDL will address Norfolk City Council on Tuesday, August 28th - about a month from now.

You should plan on arriving at 7 PM.

If you want to speak, you can sign up at the meeting or you can call 757-664-4268. You don’t have to speak, just having City Council see a room full of “Guns Save Lives” buttons is important.

I have already signed up and indicated what I will be speaking on, so Norfolk City Council should be fully aware that we are coming.

As you might imagine, we want a *huge* turnout, not only from the Tidewater members, but from across the state. We want the message to be loud and clear, “NO MORE HARASSMENT OF LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS!”
and “NO MORE ILLEGAL ORDINANCES!”

Hope to see you there next month!

The Norfolk city council is clueless. The city attorney listened with a smirk on his face the entire time. It took much control for me not to stand and tell him to wipe that smirk off his face. What the NPD did to these people is criminal and the taxpayers are going to pay BIG TIME for their criminal activity. Story below.

DadGUM I wish I coulda been there!

Various health issues (mold? walking pneumonia? I have no clue, I just know I can't breathe) got between me and making the drive.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Here's info on Mr. Riddick who decided to temporarily abdicate during the meeting:

Paul R. Riddick

Paul R. Riddick was first elected to Council in July 1992 representing Ward 4.

Riddick is owner and operator of Riddick Funeral Service in Norfolk. He attended Norfolk State University and has an A.A.S. degree in funeral service from John Tyler Community College, Chester, Virginia.

He is chairman of the Southside Task Force and is a member of the Church Street/Huntersville Development Committee. He serves on the Legislative and Strategic Planning and Youth, Education and Neighborhoods council committees. He also represents the city as a member of the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project and Chairman of the Regional Jail Authority.

Additionally, he is a member and former Vestryman of Grace Episcopal Church; former President of the Norfolk Branch of NAACP; Lead Plaintiff in Riddick vs. Norfolk City School Board (a suit filed to prevent the return to segregated elementary schools); member of Eastern Light 04 Masonic Lodge, Prince Hall Mason; Alpha and Omega Consistory #9; Norfolk Funeral Directors and Embalmers Assn.; Virginia Morticians Assn.; Tux Club and Hiawatha Social and Beneficial Assn. (the two oldest Black men's club in Norfolk's history); Bachelor Benedict Social Club (the organization has presented African-American females as Debutantes since 1921.); voted Omega Psi Phi Citizen of the Year by the Lamda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity incorporated and was honored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as a "Citizen of Tomorrow."

Mr. Riddick has five children and is the proud grandfather of six.

Apparently Mr Riddick has some issues so he may have left the meeting because he feared he might lose control of himself. What a prince of a fellow!

Did anybody get to mention the incredibly unprofessional behavior of the city attorney? Evidently Pishko is a piece of work -- the kind of lawyer who explains the joke about what happens when you give a lawyer viagra -- he just gets taller.

When Chet was speaking, Mr. Fishco was distracted and began talking to the gentlemen on his right. Chet, understandably so, raised his voice and said something like, “I am speaking to YOU! Mr. Fishco.” VCDL had a good, orderly turnout and it made me proud to be an American.
One other bad deal was a young black man who open carries and has been accosted, arrested twice in the downtown area during the day. As one person said, the Norfolk police are equal opportunity offenders.
This will be an expensive lesson for our inept city council and police department. FOIA requests taking months instead of the 5 days required bny law, etc.
