SÃO PAULO, Brazil - Officials struggled Thursday to determine why a jetliner raced down a runway before crashing in a fireball that killed at least 189 people — an accident that set off a fierce debate over whether to close Brazil's busiest airport.

Security video released by the air force showed TAM Flight 3054 from Porto Alegre speeding down the tarmac more than four times as fast as other planes landing around the same time.

The Airbus-320 skidded off the main runway in a heavy rain, jumped over a highway and slammed into a building Tuesday night, killing all 186 people aboard and at least three people on the ground.

What? with a normal landing speed of 125-150 knots, how could Flight 3054 be attempting a landing at 4x normal landing speed?

...What is the "speed of rotation" (take-off speed) for an Errbus A320...."4x as fast?"/were they on a taxiway?

It’s the scariest airport I’ve ever seen

ahem...try the (old?) airport in Huntington, WV...landing there '84, 737 pilot had to "stand on the brakes...rainy/morning/short runway...burnt wrecks next to runways...long ago.

That would make sense—that he aborted the landing and tried to take off again.

Remind me not to fly into that airport.

One think about LaGuardia, if your short or long your in the drink and not into a gas station.

It sure is fun at LaGuardia on a rainy night watching them take off and land. There is an excellent view from the bar upstairs.

Not only that, but why would a gas station be allowed near the end of the runway even if it is on private property?

I believe Burbank has a runway that has a gas station across the street from the threshold. A Southwest flight ended up next to the pumps a few years ago; luckily, no fatalities.

BurbankKarl says it's no longer there.
