It could be true. I have had personal experience with good stable people who had clean homes, nice cars and happy families before getting involved with crack or meth. Their personalities and values change almost instantly and they become paranoid shells of the person they once were.

Values? She couldn’t have had many to get involved with drugs in the first place.

My dad tells me about some people who used to work with that the same kind of thing happened. Cocaine screws up your brain; you're not the same after it's done frying your neurons. It usually makes people psychopathic.
