I thought the same thing - the local grocery store sells the brand for about 50 cents a can... I make my own chili - don’t buy canned chili.
Come to think of it, I never quiet figured out what was IN that stuff anyway.....
hamburger
catsup...(not Heinz)
minced onions
chili powder
not too tough to do
In equal parts, they combine "100% animal meat," the souls of recalcitrant air travelers, and red dye #42.
That is how I feel about refried beans in a can. Taste worse than cheap dog food smells.
So when I make home made taco’s I buy just a side order of refried beans (half pint) for $1.50 from the local Mex. resteraunt.
Fry my own corn tortillas, make my own meat/sauce then pile on the lettuce/tomatoes/onions and cheese.
Yum.
If you look closely at the Castleberry Chili can, the first meat ingredient is “heart.” Beef organs are the most susceptible to disease, “Mad Cow,” etc. I quit buying it after I saw that. Too bad, ‘cause it tastes the best of the canned.
Most people do not know - but the meat in canned chili for a Coney Island hot dog (invented in Detroit, BTW, not on Coney Island) is made from beef heart.
Nothing beats a downtown Detroit Layfayette Coney Island with mustard and onions. Pure heaven.
You can keep your Chicago style hot dogs with their tossed salad topping - give me a real Coney Island and an order of chili fries with a Vernors or Faygo Red Pop.
